Hi everyone-

I am new to the forum. I was seeking some opinions on my current project. I have a 5513 sub. The case and movement are from the IV quarter of 1965 with an original super-dome crystal. At some point when the watch was serviced before I owned it, The dial and hands were replaced, I am assuming during the 1980's because it has a spider dial with matching hands and the bezel insert is very dark. I would like to bring this watch back to it's original look. I recently purchased an original faded Bezel which looks great that I am swapping out. I have several questions I would like some advice on.

1- Is there any way to know from the serial number which dial came on this watch besides through Rolex? I know both the gloss gilt dial and the maxi dial was available at this time. Was there a non-gloss gilt dial?

2- I have seen the Gilt dial models from this time period with both the matching gold colored hands, as well as the silver colored hands. Which is correct? Were both versions original?

3-Purchasing an original period unrestored dial is a bit too expensive. I purchased a very well done re-finished gloss gilt dial and aftermarket hands. How will the use of this original rolex re-finished dial and after-market hands affect the resale value of the watch compared to keeping the spider dial in place? As of now with the current spider dial, it's not worth anything close to what it would be if the original dial was still in place, So will the use of the re-finished gilt dial be negative or neutral to the value?

Any opinions and feedback would be greatly appreciated.

hi glen,

with a 65 marked case back its leaning to gilt heavily...there are a few 1.5 mil matt dial meters first out there but they are the exception not the norm .... there are no maxi dials in 65..the first didnt hit until 75ish...

the use of a aftermarket gilt and handset will scare 99% of vintage collectors away and will probably have the effect of making the value equal to the watch without a dial as a project..and less than as is now...IMHO

Thanks for the feedback, That's what I assumed to be the case, I would love to have an original dial, but might have to wait until I find one for a reasonable price. Most of the ones if found for sale are close to the price of another watch.. I may us the the re-furb dial now and swap it out later if I'm going to sell or find a better option...

Any thoughts on the hands? gold or silver or both?
