My first Rolex, and some questions ... Need Experts

Hello guys,

I need some experts advice here as I'm a newbie in Rolex watches

I just received a preowned Rolex Explorer 2021 124270 full set, at 600 USD below retail, I am very pleased with the watch, it fits me perfectly and the overall state is like new, but I noticed 3 things that retained my attention :

1) A little scratch on the caseback
https://ibb.co/DGPW1LQ

2) A mark around the clasp (normal I guess)
https://ibb.co/YQpKSfv

3) A very thin stain/scratch on the crystal, but I don't feel it when I apply my nail on it, and as you can see on the 2nd pic, it's invisible most of the time.
https://ibb.co/pjtQm5v

https://ibb.co/w7YwhFx

https://ibb.co/5KS1gFw

My question, is it nothing so I can keep the watch OR I return it, and wait for THE call from the AD for a new one.

It's the first expensive watch I buy so I really need some inputs, thanks :)

Those same things will happen to your new watch should you decline this one. Possibly ask for a additional discount due to the condition noted. $600 + a additional $400 would cover your concerns during the first service. Tit for tat so to speak.

Personally the defects you mentioned would not bother me if I like the watch. The ball is in your court. You will have to make a decision in what is going to make you feel satisfied.

The mark on the case back looks like they tried to sand out an engraving. That isnt a scratch.
The mark on the clasp looks like polishing burn when the metal is held again the polishing wheel for too long.
And the scratch on the crystal, there isnt much you can do about it unless you have the crystal replaced.

If the seller disclosed these issues in their listing, or clearly depicted them in photos, or if you inspected the watch in person, then I believe these are the minor defects one could expect and accept.

But if this was not disclosed then I believe the gouge on the caseback deserves some financial consideration from the seller in your favor.

None of the things you shared are deal-breakers if you feel the price was fair.

You’ll have your own marks and worse in no time. Enjoy that great reference at the discount you got.

If you plan to daily this watch and beat the crap out of it I wouldn’t worry about these things. Just enjoy it.

If it’s a box queen to admire its pristine perfection, I’d send it back to the seller.

If you’re concerned about long term value, then best to stay away from Explorers. Their market is extremely soft, save for a good 1016.

If you just want a great watch and won’t worry about scratches, then you got a good deal on the 124270.

this - depends on what was disclosed and how watch was "marketed" (condition wise)

Congrats on your Explorer!
These are all things YOU need to decide if you're comfortable with.
If not, return it and buy a BNIB one from a reputable seller and no wait.

If the issues were not disclosed then I would have a conversation and ask for a few hundred off. If they were disclosed, then just enjoy your watch.

I have a small first, 6 inch, so I can only wears 36 rolexes, or old 5 digit sub, but I prefer pristine condition.

How did you get yours ? AD?

Very interesting thanks

Replacing the crystal void the warranty?

If you wanted brand new and to pay the extra at retail, I don’t think the wait would be too long from the AD.

I'd personally return it and wait for a new one from your AD. It shouldn't be too long of a wait.

A lot of good and reasonable advice here.

All that I would add is to ask yourself if your expectations of a used piece are reasonable, given the price? Or, do you feel it’s a lack of detail from the seller?

The former may lead you right back here. The latter would put a cloud over the purchase and make me want to send it back.

I’ve been both.

It is a used watch, to expect everything to be as-new is not reasonable.

If you are not satisfied with your purchase then you have a decision to make. As far as these minor cosmetics are concerned, as some have said, you will have the same in a few weeks no matter what you decide.

All are pretty reasonable responses. I have bought a few of my Rolexes pre-owned and simply sent them off for service. I got them all back just about as good as new. Now they have my own marks and scuffs on them. Eventually, they will have to be sent off again but in the meantime....

My first Rolex, and some questions ... Need Experts

I would return it. The crystal scratch and caseback gauge would not be acceptable to me. I have bought multiple used watches and they all came pristine. At $600 off retail I would expect a slider condition watch of that model.

I’d return it. You should not have too long of a wait, from an AD, for this model.

return it. I've bought a fair number of "used" rolex watches over the years and none looked like that.

My take? You got a watch for 600 under retail that has about $600 worth of damage. It's curious damage though. That is a pretty deep gouge in the caseback and a big scratch on the crystal. I've worn mine every day for 5 years and it has a ton of micro swirls and sleeve polish and such but no gouges and the crystal is fine. Shit happens though.

I was thinking the same. It’s some kind of damage, and my mind immediately went to the possibility that it was stolen, in a violent confrontation, of some kind. I feel that something is off, here. Just return it.

You bought a pre-owned watch correct?

You saved some $$ and the watch works fine?

Now you want to sell it back to the dealer for your purchase price?

If I were the dealer, you'd be taking a $600 dollar hit if you don't want the watch any more. How does the dealer know what you've done to the watch?

So for $600 more you can get a new pristine Explorer...so, wait for it.

I would return it. Clasp and crystal don’t bother me too much, but that gouge in the case back is weird….how does that happen! That looks deep and not just a superficial scuff. Just seems odd and would bother me.
