Totally two different watches with different price points that serve different purposes
PP aid more dressy, expensive, elegant, and has the GMT if you travel Daytona Blue is a beautiful color, has history, more versatile and has the Chrono if you’re a car racer

I’ve seen the white gold version and found it surprisingly appealing. Probably the only Patek that interests me. I’d never compare Rolex to Patek, but in this case I’d go for the Patek. It really depends on what else you have in the safe.

That Patek reminds me of IWC and Zenith pilot watches. Nothing wrong with them, just not my style

What? You like two differently branded watches, that is the truth. Cheating? Really not sure what you are getting at. I own both and enjoy having them in my collection.

The 5712 is my absolute favorite watch ever. It magically transforms from sporty to dressy depending on what you're wearing, it's really amazing. I like the Daytona but it lacks the chameleon quality of the Nautilus, the Pepsi even more so. The Rolexes look great in the right context but the PP looks amazing with anything. My $.02.
It is sick to think of spending $70K+ for a Nautilus but I was fortunate enough to get all my pieces at retail, which softens the blow. :) I need to take some decent pics but here is a shameless showoff of my SS trinity. trinity.jpg |

Rolex are utilitarian luxury watches. They can take a beating and keep on ticking. Patek are for the most part purely luxury. I have heard horror stories about repair costs and fragility of Patek watches.
I don't really see them as comparable. I'd always own a Rolex before a Patek. You need a watch that is no fuss before buying something that is a bit more "special." |

I have not seen alive 5711. I must admit it. Looking at pictures that watch does nothing to me, neither sings nor talks even. Beauty lies with the beholder they say. Hope that is true as far as 5711 is concerned. IMHO majority of demand for it is generated because of its scarcity.

I’d aways get any SS Rolex over any SS Patek. Durable, good and colourful design! Classical evolution, more affordable, much easier to service and last but not least liquidity in a need of cash is much better!

What I start to understand is the difference between these two great, unique brands: PP and Rolex. If you are lucky enough to own a Patek: It is more fragile, on another level, like some rare antique work of art. That means that the service costs etc. are higher and PP is such a watch that you should not dive or work in a forest with PP on your wrist. PP is like a crown jewel of watches. Rolex is a luxurious toolwatch (well; with the Cellini -line—fragile aswell..). Different animal, amazing watch brand. Loving both brands, owning both watches; you’ll get a whole different watch-experience. Deep, meaningful&historical. I love this thread and all your answers; thanks!!!!! Now I know what to do. My Patek 5066 is just as durable as my rolexes ! In some ways it's been more durable than my rolex less problems last longer between services too ! One down side very long wait for a service compared to rolex. Im talking my 5066 movement being durable the case hell no the satin polish bezel is the achilles heel when it comes to scratches.

Many people own both Patek and Rolex watches. They are not mutually exclusive.
Most Patek owners own Rolex watches. However amongst general Rolex owners, I would say few own Patek watches. |

Really having a hard time with my next purchase and might just hold off. Really want a 5990 as a daily beater but not paying the current premium so if I went with a more near term purchase it would be a Platona or a Patek 5905p.
Platona would be more of a daily beater and would get way more wrist time but it wears really small on me so don't know if I could learn to love it. If i did learn to love it I would let some of my other watches go since they wouldn't get hardly any wrist time. The 5905p would be my only dress watch and I love the larger size, complication and blue dial but I might only wear it a few times a year. I do want another Patek to round out the collection a little more though. I've also just thought about saying screw it and going with a grail watch and get a 5370p but again it wouldn't get much wrist time as a dress watch. Then look towards the new AP concept GMT but don't know if its not classic enough to stand the test of time even though it would get way more wrist time now. Think my best bet is just to hold off for now. |

I would guess the majority on this Patek forum have AP and Rolex along with Pateks or did at some point. Each timepiece manufacturer is good in a certain specific category.

I am not struggling between Patek and Rolex as I have never really lusted for any Rolex. I have thought about the Explorer I, ceramic Daytona, and SD4K at times, but could never convince myself to pull the trigger. Somehow the design language of Rolex doesn't sing to me - I prefer the looks of pre-Richemont IWC and am not bothered by their use of ETA etc movements. I also like to have a date but no cyclops on my basic tool watches.

The only struggle I have is not able to get the Patek 5164. It's been a long and constant struggle.

I own that WG Daytona with the blue dial, and it gets far more wrist time than my 5711 in white.
I know it’s late in the thread, but wanted to mention the size... the pilot GMT is a pretty big watch, and I would say much larger than most Patek offerings. It’s another knock against how it looks relative to the “traditional” lineup, and doesn’t really help the cause with die hards. Have tried on the Pilot GMT and think it wears very differently to the Daytona... Far prefer how the Daytona wears. |

No. Not struggling at all. They both make great watches but at different price points and different clientele. It’s not an either or thing. Buy them both for a more rounded collection.
