5712/1A or 5960p-016 (black dial)

Hi all -

I've decided to trade my 5167A (my only Patek, acquired below msrp in 2015) and my 116170BLNR (acquired at msrp last year) towards a grail piece.

Although not a huge fan of the 5711 I love the quirky dial of the 5712. I've also always loved the opaline black dial of the 5960p-016 and the fact it was only made for 1 year is cool. I can honestly say I'm equally enamoured!

Both are available to me through a (grey) trade, but I can only get one (economics are almost identical). Whichever one I pick, it will be babied/special occasion watch. Which would it be for you? Any thoughts appreciated!

All I can say is that I previously owned both of those watches and regret selling them. I would think twice!

BUT to answer your question the 5712 would be my preference as I like steel and water resistance.

Obviously those are two very different watches! I love my 5712, but it certainly doesn't also have an Annual calendar and chronograph integrated. I love both of those complications, so I'd actually lean towards the 5960. Also considering it'll be a special occasion piece. You don't see as many of those around. Everybody flashes the Nautilus these days.

I feel your trade cost for the Nautilus is mostly from the hype value, whereas the 5960 cost it's the true value of the watch. Of course your Aquanaut hype value is built into your trade, which is nice to take advantage of right now. So my suggestion would be sell the aqua not high, and buy the 5960 "low" (or at actual value).

I like the 5712 more but not the grey price, might be worth waiting a while to see how this thing plays out over the summer.

I'm not sure it will make a lot of difference to me. My aquanaut has a lot of hype value in it also and that would fall too - maybe (probably more) than the 5712. If i map out what I paid in cash for the two pieces originally, either piece works out around $50k or just under

I mean the 5712 is obviously stunning but this black opaline dial is stunning also. I believe its the only 5960 dial that does not have a contrasting chrono subdial and I read somewhere that only 50-100 pieces were produced (which explains I guess why its way more pricey than the other 5960p models).
So torn!

Yes it will be tough to let them go! But they are both 'daily' type watches and have gotten so little wrist time since I finally managed to get a 116500. I am thinking it would be fitting to use them to get something for special occasions

I would go with the 5712. I like the 5960p blue better than black.

Well you could sell the Aqua now and wait a couple of months as there will probably be downward price pressure while CV takes over the world for the time being. I'm seeing alot of famous people who now have it are saying it is just like a normal or mild flu so I think the current hysteria might not last that long once people who are not in the at-risk groups see what this virus or this strand of it is really like.

Very tough decision. If you want something more dressy I’d go with the 5960p. I like both the black and grey dials.

Try not sell your 5167 if you can help it. You may regret it....

I think it really depends on the rest of your collection. The 5712 is definitely the more versatile piece and currently "the watch" to have. but the 5960 is a thing of beauty and if your into horology is the more interesting piece. Can't go wrong with either just depends on what direction your looking to take your collection. I have the 5712 and it makes me smile every time I put it on!

Whatever you decide to do keep the 5167. It’s a really nice piece that’s not easily replaced.

Looking at this again and it isn’t even close in my opinion. 5960P by a mile and here’s why. For approximately 60-70K you’re choice is a platinum AC & chrono with power reserve, limited quantity and the price has held for a few years on the secondary or a stainless steel scratch magnet with a basically useless moon phase and a measly 48 power reserve with a hype driven price and still in production and lots of them out there. And for your trade watches you’ve got about 28-30K invested. I would make that trade for the 5960P immediately. I’d also wear the 5960P practically every day.

The 5960p hands down. It’s a special piece that can be worn daily. As great as the nautilus is, it’s over hyped and not as versatile as the 5960. Once the hype dies down you could also pick up the Nautilus.

If you are going to have a beater like a sub, perhaps the 5960p might suit you better. If one watch collection the 5712a for sure.

I would go with the 5712a first.

Ideally both but that is so cliche ;/

I will get the one that is discontinued, small production numbers and never to be produced again. More justified the premium over list price you are paying IMHO.

Cheers

I just took a quick look on chrono24 and there are only 5 5960p-016 watches listed globally. I am leaning in this direction right now! Plus if I don’t bond with it I guess I could always trade for a nautilus.

5960

Imo this watch is underrated at this moment. If you like steel better go with the steel option 5960

I'd go 5712A in any event. A 13.5mm thick platinum dress watch wouldn't work as a beater for me. I'd not be keen on beating up a 5712A but in the end a banged up Nautilus looks pretty cool, as good as a mint one IMO, just different.

It’s going to be a special occasion piece. LOL I don’t think I could bang up any pricey watch :-) I have OCD in general and couldn’t survive that. I’m always worried when wearing the aquanaut about marring the brushed surface. For me, 5960 might be the more wearable option. Plus, the black dial 5960 looks reasonably sporty for a dress watch IMHO
