Rolex 16570 engraved rehaut movemet

Want to share my experience with my current Rolex Explorer II. I bought this watch 7 months ago. I bought it without performing any tests such as “crown test” / “wiggle test”. I trusted the engraved rehaut and the dealer instead (who btw was a really reputable dealer). After a few months of purchase I was changing hours and noticed that GMT hand wiggles and crown doesn’t as stable as my old Explorer’s. So, both tests failed But I was like “no way, it cannot be true”... Months passed but that thought about 2 failed tests couldn’t leave my mind. So, I went to a watchmaker so that he could open the case and make my worries go away. And... We have 3185 not 3186 inside.. I then called the Dealer and he was like: Yes, it had 3185 inside not 3186 I told you that. So he gave me few hundreds back.. Thank God I bought it at a relatively good price. Also, as we all know, Explorers tend to go only upwards in their value, so at least did not lose so much money on this purchase.
I googled about 3186 Calibers in 16710 and most of them started with Z9 serials. My only concern now is that if my Explorer originally came with 3185 or 3186 as i seen 16570 w/ 3186 without engraved rehaut and have read that dealers swap the movements from 16570 to 16710 in order to make more $. Any opinion on this?!

I've never heard of this, but could absolutely see it happening. I do know engraved rehaut doesn't automatically mean 3186. What serial is your explorer?

The easiest way to find out if it’s a 3186 is the crown test if a full rotation is 8 or 9 hours 3186 5 or 6 3185

Most G, V and M serial 16570s have engraved rehauts but that definitely doesn't mean they have a 3186 in them. I believe the switch was made between M serials so a mix of these with engraved rehauts have both 3185 or 3186.

I also do not believe that a grey seller would source down a spare 3185 to fit in a 3186 16570 in order to make a few bucks, doesn't sound profitable to me factoring in labour and sourcing costs.

If your 16570 has a 3185 in it then it most likely had it when Rolex assembled it.

"Crown Test" is seeing how many hours are jumped in one full rotation of the crown. 3186 should jump 8 hours while the 3185 should jump 6. It's a simple and effective way to see which movement is in the watch without opening it up.

When I was shopping around, I came across a polar with engraved rehaut...the dealer said it had a 3186, but it failed the wiggle test. Sure enough, my watchmaker opened the case back and confirmed it was a 3185.

A couple weeks later, I found another polar that was a Z serial without an engraved rehaut....with a 3186.

There is no rhyme or reason when it comes to which serial has the movement, it I do believe it made its first appearance in the Z serial.
