i vote for the 5990. There are two complications that do not come together too often in high pieces. These are two complications I actually use. I travel a fair bit. The nice thing about the 5990 is that when traveling it does not stand out and less likely to be a theft target. In addition, when i travel sometimes i do like to time specific events -- e.g. specific travel times etc. I also like the symmetry of the two sub dials. I have a 5712 and 5164 and seriously thought about trading in to get a 5990 but will likely not do that at this point.

One can easily add the 5990 to the 5980r and have to compatible yet different watches. If I owned a 5980/1a I would not consider it as they would be somewhat redundant. If I didn't own a 5980/1a and was looking to add a Nautilus I would certainly consider this if I was wanting a steel watch. I will say like most new watches people are unsure of they do have a tendency to grow on us over time. I also think seeing them in person and handling them can change initial reactions.

Not completely convinced on either, like the heft of the 5980 not to keen of the "punch hole protector" look. Love the complications of the 5990, but I have to admit is a little cluttered.
Just glad that I don't have to decide which one

I checked the Patek 2014 catalog book and it shows the 5990 as being slightly thicker (0.3mm?) than the 5980. Just an FYI in case anyone else was also wondering about it.....

Would be interesting to do the poll again and see what happens. I think the 5990 might win.

Bitter, sorry. Nautilus 5980 was my dream, 3710 was my reality, scratches were my nemesis...distracted by Calatrava. Done with Nautilus for now.

A dream never dies...

I have yet to hold a 5990, but I already formed my opinion. I don't dislike the 5990, I just prefer the 5980 and it's date window and single sub dial. A GMT function is something I never wanted (going back to my early Rolex days). But I do prefer the placement of the chrono pushers on the 5990.
Like most Patek this-or-that comparos, no wrong way to go here!

What's not to love about the 5990, It's all the 5980 is and more.
But Patek Blue dial is lovely and not available on 5990.

I remember when the first PP 5990 announcement was released. There were so many negative posts. The usual issues related to crowded dial and price-- all valid were made by quite a few. However the one issue that seems to have been lost is the fact that the chronograph was limited to 60 minutes. In my opinion, this is not a big deal because when i do use a chronograph it is rarely for more than an hour. Also easy to keep track of hours. Anyway-- it just seems like there are a lot of more folks who have come around on this piece. Perhaps ascertainment bias because most in this forum are fans of PP in one way or another.

reading the last posts ….

Like I said before

ALWAYS
Always when a new model is introduced people will prefer the old model and definitely the people who own an old piece will prefer their own piece
If you made such a poll when the 116610 replaced the 16610 people voted for the 16610, when after a few years more and more people own the new piece the new model will win such a poll.
Same with the daytona 16520 and 116520
I would take the 5990 in a heartbeat and I am 100% sure if you make this poll once again in 2016, the result will be exactly the opposite
It is very are when the discontinued watch wins such a poll after a few years

it even doesn't take a few years in this case LOL

I think folks try to rationalize why the new model is not so great--- so they won't fork out bucks for the new model.

there is always some fear to jump 1st with new references because you don't know how that watch is gonna pan out. Once the watch is establish then the poll is more trustworthy.
Rationally the 5990 should be ahead.

I prefer the 5980 and as such purchased one recently. Reasons being:

1. Cleaner dial. Love the classic blackish blue-ish green dial.
2. Shape of pushers more consistent with the angles and shape of the Nautilus.
3. I don't care for GMT style of function on Patek's. Seems too technical.
4. Prefer digital date for sports watch.

I do like the thinner bezel on the 5990. It is a fantastic watch but just not for me.

The 5990 has a cluttered dial, the bullseye dial is way nicer aesthetically

I'd still pick the 5980, clearer dial and blue to boot.

In this updated poll from November 2015 the 5980 was still more popular.

http://www.rolexforums.com/showthrea...highlight=5990

My feeling is the 5980 is still more popular today.

so, i happened to be doing some research on the 5990 and i found some of the comments on here relating to changing opinions over time interesting.

i am curious, do folks still prefer the 5980? how has the 5990 'aged' in peoples minds?
