Id rather the more discreet 5711r and then add a true PP chrono movement - 5070/5170.

The 5711 however, wow, the way it feels on your wrist is simply superb, wraps around it with such finesse and subtle dexterity, it becomes an extension of yourself. I feel almost transhuman wearing it.

My vote is for the 5711/1R, it is the only fully gold watch that I will ever purchase, with maybe the exception of the AP15400 with pink gold and blue dial.
Transhuman is a new one. I've used terms like ethereal elegance but always good to note new experiences.

The 5980/1R is a beast...as a stainless 5980 owner I would love to own the 5980/1R.

Love the dial. Love the weight.

If the 5980/1R had the blue dial of the 5980/1AR, then it would be a killer looking watch. But until then, I like the simple dial of the 5711/1R.

5980 all day. That is the king of all gold watches.

5711 is without question, more elegant. The 5980 is more sporty.

Can anyone comment on what the 5980r is like to wear with shirts? Does it obstruct the cuff or does it fit underneath it? I know the 5711r would be fine. Just wondered what people who wear it everyday with a shirt think?

You can wear both under a dress shirt IMO.

The 5711 is not as sporty as the 5980 but that's my opinion.

I've tried one before and had no issues with it slipping under the cuff. Then again, I get my shirts tailored and the left cuff is always a bit bigger than the right. I guess what I'm driving at is... get the 5980r and then get a shirt for the 5980, and not the other way around 😀

I never thought of that! Lol. That's certainly a way around watches that sit high on the wrist. Hats off to your creativity

^^5980 is a beauty, saw it at the AD for the first time a week ago.
If you can afford it and don't mind the heft, I would say go for it and get your shirts tailored right, I mean left...LOL !!

I'm a chrono fan, so the 5980/1r over the 5711... And the DEF over the Platona.

5711 more dressy and elegant, 5980 more sporty, hard to compare as they are so different, just for the weight I would rake the 5711

I know you meant to say you would take the 5980 if price was no issue, given in absolute terms it costs more,.. BUT .. is it me.. isn't the 5711 a more expensive watch on a RELATIVE value basis?

spending 50k on a gold watch that just tells the time (and simple date function) is a pretty bold statement. the 5711 isn't flashy, its not big, it doesn't have loads of bells and whistles.. it just tells the time and STILL costs a bomb, certainly relative to other time-only watches.

compare that to the 5980.. chrono space is significantly more complex, and yet the price of the 5980 is just 50% more than the 'vanilla' 5711.

makes me think if price is no issue, and you want to make a statement, the 5711 is the way to go. 50k for a time only. nobody / not much in the modern patek range can mess with that.

if you want to get into chrono's on the other hand, the 5980 may not stand up / or are only on par with, some of the other patek models.

just a thought.. as i think a lot of people tend to simply spring for the most expensive model in absolute terms because they assume more expensive must be better. (not saying thats what the honourable people on this forum think.. just thats a popular impression out there amongst others!!)

Forgive me in advance, it's not my intention to offend. I find that the 5980 is big, chunky, not slim enough, and as a result a not discreet. It really is blingy and especially so in "R" metal.
It's so big that that the Nautilus "elegance" is lost. It becomes an out and out sports watch.

The beauty of the 5711 (and 5712) are that they are slim enough to be elegant - you could actually wear a 5711r with a suit and it would look great poking out from under a shirt cuff, especially if you have a tan.

The 5980R is a bit AP for me. And sorry gents once more, I really dislike AP and the whole ROO thing is all bit naff.
Just my worthless 2c.

5980 is one of the best sport watches ever. And, the bracelet is about the best in the business.

Is that the 2016 Basel release of the 5140p in your Avatar? Do you own it?
