Intro and Choices

Good Morning Enthusiasts,
I am new to the Patek Philippe forum and have enjoyed the short time I've had privilege to read and absorb your knowledge. I am going to purchase my first time piece, presumably this weekend in NYC, and would appreciate a bit of guidance as pertaining to appropriate Manhattan pricing. If you would care to assist me in what would be acceptable prices for the following hour glasses on a wrist it would be appreciated.

5396 rose gold
5205 yellow gold
5146 yellow gold
5146 rose gold
5496 rose gold
5159 rose gold

Best Wishes and Thank You
JR, MD

P.S.
Some day this wrist will fill the hole in a 5204 rose gold.

The three different annual calendars each have distinctive feels and wrist presences, not to mention aesthetics. It's what sings to you. All three - 5205, 5396, 5146 are lovely watches that have many fans.

5496 is unique watch with the retrograde PC and dial color. A love it or hate it watch for many. Again something only you would know. 5159 is a more classic and ornate version of the 5496. Much dressier. If that's what you're looking for.

Personally, I prefer Patek's annual calendars over their straight PC's (unless we're talking the discontinued 3940 or perhaps the black-dialed 5940). But I've handled all 5 of these watches and they're all beautiful in their own way. Try them on, walk around, see how they feel, take your time. And good luck!

I like the 5159 of your choices. Also look at a 5140 if you want a PC or its predecessor the 3940 as mentioned above (albeit it's a smaller case).

You have some very good choices to choose from. First I would try as many of them on your wrist and ask yourself if you really want a PC or will you be happy with an AC. There is a significant price difference between an AC and a PC. As someone mentioned, you can probably get a pre-owned 3940 for a little more than what you would pay for a new AC.

I don't know what characteristic of a watch is important to you and if you are looking for a daily watch or something to wear on special occasions. IMO an AC or a PC can be worn as a daily watch, but far fewer people wear a PC as a daily watch. My thought is that PC owners tend to baby their watches more and they usually have a larger collection of watches to choose from when deciding on a daily watch.

No offense Jay but it seems like you are all over the board here with several models and metal choices. Like others have stated try a bunch on and don't make any hasty decisions. These pieces are not cheap and buyer's remorse or an impulse buy could cost you $$$$$ if you decide you do not like and opt to sell. Happy Hunting!

Thank you for your input. I have tried many time pieces and depending on the mood that strikes I may purchase one of the choices to which I have narrowed my possibilities. By asking those with more experience in purchasing luxury watches, i'd say that I am showing trust and respect to the particular members who decide to assist rather than judge. Please keep in mind that not everyone's decisions are abnormal because they aren't identical to that of yours. In my experience, there will be days where favorites or preferences will differ significantly. Thank you for your assistance on this matter.
P.S. I have called multiple Patek Dealers and though their websites beg of you to call to discuss pricing, they will not honor their own request. I have sat with others who do not know their product and do not care to answer insightful honest questions.

Just as an aside, and with all due respect, buyers remorse is not in my repertoire. If I were impulsive I would have asked these questions after I made the purchase. Just because I can afford the watch does not mean that I should not be interested in obtaining the best possible price. I do not live beyond my means.

I am not asking for your research. I am asking for your experience. If you have personal experience with these particular models, it would be nice for a bit of insight.

Cool watch Stephen really like this one, not planning on getting any calendar watch, but must say if I did I would definitely consider this one, no watch is as nice as a blue dial PP IMHO, never understood people who get other dial colors when a blue one is possible, tastes I guess, anyways you have a sweet watch

Interesting idea, that may not fly, but if an MD purchases a very high end timepiece, capable of being used in their daily medical routine, might it be considered a partial business expense?

Just might be worth going to med school.

Any tax accountants here?

I'd go 5396r. Useful daily wearer with a clean dial.

That or go straight to the prize 5204r

Can't help on market pricing I'm afraid but NYC may not be the best place to shop for a good deal on these pateks.

Interesting that you're comparing AC watches with PC watches. The 5159 is an amazing piece in my opinion. I have the 5146 and it's great as a daily wear watch.

Is there an official list of total pieces produced for each reference model Patek Philippe?

Haha, that thought has actually crossed my mind. I would have no qualms pointing out the the 15 pulsation gradation would save me 15 minutes per day per 20 patients seen. If I were in solo practice I would probably give it a shot.

For most PP models I think there are less RG produced than YG and WG.

Fairly large range of prices here. If you go for either of the last two, there are a whole
lot of other great watches to consider for that money.
I like the 5205r black if you consider value/$, but all are nice.
But if price is no object, then 5204r!!
You may have seen this, but here's a nice article:

So here's a question...Who's the best Patek AD to obtain a 5159 or 5396?

Have to admit I find that 5159 very tempting. I thought the 5327 was in the front of the pack but I love that retro look and the hands!

Theae watches are not really the ones I Would choose for me, but I Really like the 5140p, the blue dial is amazing, ok I know it's not on your list but I would consider it where I you, and the 5159 in RG, also a beauty but both are too dressy for me, I like the Nautilus and Aquanauts way better than any other PP's.

And welcome to TRF by the way

I'd have to say that the 5396R-012 is at the top of the list...
