5712 in stainless or white gold??

Hey guys,

New to the forum. I'll post an introduction and pics soon. I've searched and read a number of old threads, but wanted some fresh and straight opinions on 5172 in stainless vs white gold.

I have a Rolex Yachtmaster ss/platinum and a 5196r already. I love Patek so much that I wanted more of a daily driver from the brand. I love the complications of the 5712 and also the 240 movement with the 22k micro rotor.

I'm on the wait list for the SS, but I have the immediate opportunity to buy the white gold version. As you know, wait list is (as I was told) is at least 18 months (from the PP salon in London).

The SS seems to be the most sought after. Is it the more desirable piece, or is it due to price? I can always buy the 5712g now and trade out of it when my SS arrives. I have held both pieces next to each other as I also wanted to compare dial color and weight of each. The white gold has a nice heft to it.

My conundrum is; I like the discreet, yet special nature of having a precious metal, but I'm not sure if the sports watch on a leather strap is the wrong juxtaposition of sport & dress for my purpose. Then again, I already have the yacht master on SS if I want a full-blown casual piece.

Look forward to hearing some thoughts!

Sports watches seem to work nicely in SS. I presume that you're price of admission to the gold piece is far beyond the cost of bullion.

If that's the case, and beyond your appreciation of the "heft," why not go for a SS via a trusted seller?

5712 in SS is my grail. I think a sports watch works best on a bracelet.

Thanks guys, appreciate the feedback. I think you're really just confirming where my heart already was. This piece was meant to be a very casual Patek for me to wear daily. I already have the elegant gold Calatrava for dressy occasions.

jrs146, you're from "Stanley Cup, PA"?? haha, I grew up there, and still call it home although I'm living overseas at the moment.

I must admit I liked the heft of the WG as well but the dial colour really do not do it for me so did not buy in WG.

SS, no doubt. Though I am curious about the WG strap.

My vote for SS... Saw both in person and like SS better.
5712 in rose gold would be harder choice.
For PM 5712s I like the 5712R better than the 5712G

I prefer the RG over the WG. SS is nice as well. I chose the RG because I already had the 5726 on bracelet.

I think if you shop around, you can probably pick up the 5712/1A from other ADs in the EU or NA without waiting 18 months. The London Salon is nice and their staff is quite excellent and you can certainly wait 18 months for their service if you are not in a rush. But UK prices will likely increase soon and the advantage of the weaker GBP on UK watch pricing for non-UK residents will be wiped out soon.

I have tried the 5712G on some time ago and I don't think it looks as nice in person as the 5712/1A.

Forget the Salon they will invariably tell you the waiting list is 3 years for everything. I think I only bought 1 or 2 watches there. Try all the UK AD's you may get lucky. Cheers

I would agree with most here that you should wait for the SS version with bracelet.

I don't personally like the WG version, the White gold finish does not compliment the grey dial and overall the watch seems less vibrant. Whilst the SS really works well with the blue dial.

But do not knock the grey dial, it is beautiful in its own right, it just needs to be paired with RG.

If your time allows, you could come to the US and pick up a 5712/1A without having to wait.

For me SS>RG>WG the WG is not very demanded and would be the hardest one to flip and the one with biggest hit on resale for sure

For the 5712, I like it RG > SS > YG > WG

SS with RG a close second. The RG makes that dial POP!

I love my RG, although I would like to see a bracelet version of it instead of the strap.

I'd probably still go with the strap but having the extra option would be neat!

In the future, the WG will be more collectible bc no one likes it and they are producing less.

Always works this way...

Look at the porsche 964rs. No one liked it in its days...

Appreciate all the comments. erics, I know what you mean, I just sold an "ugly duck" porsche that nobody liked in its day. I sold it to a collector who already has 13 porsches including these two.....and I made money!

Oh I wouldn't bet on it, I think the most in demand will be SS, then RG and last WG, it's nice but doesn't have the wow factor that IMO the others have

I had the 5712G........it was great. I really liked it a lot, except for the strap. I ended up trading it. It served me well, and if I were to purchase another it would be the SS.
