Explanation of model numbers

I'm now fairly solid with the Rolex vernacular - could someone give me a rundown of how Panerai model numbers work? And where does 'PAM' come from? Thanks!

Really getting into Panerai's - very cool watches.

If you want to learn about Panny you need to visit Panny sites. TRF is a good place, but very few people no sh*t about anything aside from Rolex.
