I wonder what 7 weeks on Rikers did for her.

Looks aside, she probably had some time to reflect.

Perhaps the two deserve each other. Careless + opportunist = graft.

I might consider renting out a vacation home/cabin. Definitely not my main residence.

We were once asked if we would rent out our New York apartment. We said no but traded a month there for a week at a vacation property at the beach (in mid-August) for our kids, who thoroughly enjoyed their time there. Other than that one time we would not rent out either our New York or Florida apartments and certainly not our main residence in the DC area.

Just thought of something that hadn't occurred to me when I first posted. If I were to arrive at an AirB&B that had valuables inside it would make me very uncomfortable as the guest in the house. Who knows who else has access to the place, including maid service/cleaning crews, neighbor? If something went missing I'd be involved like it or not.

I can't imagine the circumstances that would cause me to think that a stranger would care for my home as well as I do, and wouldn't trash the place in my absence.

Leaving valuables at the mercy of a stranger seems like a scam or a scheme to me. Nobody that can afford the things that were stolen can really be so naïve or stupid.

It sounds like it was renting out a room not the whole place, this is quite common for those battling to cover their mortgage. It certainly would not be easy to live in a place and keep handbags etc under lock and key, although this really is no different than renters who share property and steal things or leave owing money. It made the news because it was AirBNB just like car crashes with Tesla are news.

It's not her first offense, and she lied to the police when they questioned her. Further, how was she going to "give it all back" ? The article says she sold (not pawned) the stolen goods. Sounds like she deserved more than probation IMO.

To lose one watch could be considered as an accident but to lose two is just carelessness.

Punishment not enough on $$ restitution and mental health counselling - will the judge follow up on her progress to rehabilitation?. Wonder how mentally liberating it would be for the "skank" to sport a big placard front and back as she stood on the busiest street corner for all to see: "I'm a thief".

The home owner must have dementia or a serious absence in grey matter to leave her personal luxury items as accessories embellishing the lavish contents of her home?

Sensational story!!
