As others have said, WG definitely does not look like SS, especially up close. The warm tone of the material is unique and, at least to me, visually interesting. I also find WG's heft to be both noticeable and pleasant. SS pieces feel insubstantial on my wrist these days and I've sold all of mine but one.

X2. Out of all the metals Rolex uses it is the only one that is altered to look like another color in addition to rose gold. While the hue is a bit brighter than stainless, it is not enough difference for me to justify the price premium. If I want gold it will be yellow just as it appears as it is mined out of the Earth.

I had only SS for a long time... Now I have only one last watch left: WG DD36.
As for now, I would never go back to SS anymore and YG is not for me...

After owning both simultaneously, I prefer the color of Rolex's WG (actually called "Grey gold" in the industry). Also the the WG has an amazing luster right after you clean it. Like the difference between a good diamond and cut clear glass. They look similar until they hit the light. Platinum does this even more than WG, but the color is too bright for me. Looks like chrome. Also, WG scratches more than SS, but the scratches create an amazing patina that really enhances the luster effect.

All that being said, sold the WG because of weight. Now that I can't compare them side by side, my SS looks like the color of the WG that I remember. It's all relative I guess.

As well as the luxurious heft, and subtle gold inflection, many dials only come on PM and WG models such as the flat powder blue, slate and wave dials.

Because I like it and want it.

You are trying to understand the purchase of high end luxury jewelry. Good luck!

Speaking only for myself, I can say that Rolex white gold pieces are fabulous in a very understated way. I have an oyster quartz WG Day-Date. Perfect. I can wear it on the Las Vegas Strip and I don't get a second glance. The vast majority of people cannot, do not recognize WG for what it is. I have a OQ 17014 date with 18 k WG bezel. Against its original black dial very striking, but again most people would not know WG from stainless steel. I prefer a low profile against that of a headliner in a Vegas casino. My day-date has its original silver dial.

No I am not, I own quite a few pieces myself. The question was only about WG

I entered a pawnshop to see a pair of white gold cufflinks they had on display. They were really shining more like silver. But the highlight of the visit was the employee remark that no wonder the white gold of the cufflinks looks different to my stainless steel watch. Which was a BLRO GMT in white gold! So if even a pawnshop employee can get confused what to expect from the general public?

Understand...and agree to a point.

The reality of things, however, is that a huge percentage of the population doesn't even notice our watch. I've had FAR more comments/compliments on my fitbit than any watch I've worn.

So...we're talking about a tiny percentage of folks who are going to not only notice the watch we're wearing, but notice what color it is. That group is going to include fellow WIS and those knowledgable about watches in general...and they're going to know.

But...all that's a wash, IMO. None of it matters when you strap on a fantastic WG piece...like the BLRO.

A lot of people are completely missing the point of white gold. We don’t wear white gold to let other people know we are wearing good, we wear it for ourselves. And on the wrist there is NO comparison to SS.

I never buy anything based on what other people may or may not think. I ONLY buy what I like myself.
I own an YG DD because I love the look, is someone buys they WG for the same reason I think that is great. What I was thinking when I asked this question was a sub or Daytona. A lot of folks responded that they went WG because of the dial and or bezel availability, that makes perfect sense to me. Some say they chose WG because of the color and feel, that also makes sense to me. My point being that people seem to assume that YG is more pretentious and that why some choose it. Maybe for some, but I bought it because I think it looks better

Just for clarity after reading the postings here, it is maybe good to be aware that red gold and pink gold are two different types, although many people (even jewelers sometimes!) use the terms interchanageably.

White gold is also available in various 'tastes' from the smelters according to the amount of palladium used in the alloy. So, some brands prefer production in really bright, almost steel like appearing WG, and others can be a bit more 'greyish'.

There are defined color points for these precious metals in the Swiss industry, but makers (brands) are allowed to deviate as they see fit.....Which is why one brand's RG or WG can look so different from another brand's RG or WG...(or PG for that matter!)
Cheers all,
Rushwarp

The PM's come in unique color combo's or in special edition's, i.e., GMT Pepsi, that you just can't get in SS.

The dial markers & numerals and hands in WG are “ seductive “ to my eyes and speak “ softly “ to my heart whenever I look at my watches !

Love white gold, especially on the Smurf & DD40. It gives you weight, stealth and a beautiful subtle yellow gold sheen in certain light. The yellow gold photographs well, but in person I find it a bit too brassy and loud, not to say that will not work for others. Cheers!

I’ve owned white gold and rose gold. This is an oft touched about subject here and there is no wrong answer with gold.

For me I could not pull off the rose gold. I felt self conscious around friends that did not have much disposable income.

I went WG and I loved it. Dam scratch magnet though.

I love WG and the different tones it takes, rolex wg anyway. Feels planted on the wrist and really hefty.
