5 seconds fast?
Just got my 2009 Rolex DJ serviced at a very reputable local vintage watch store for $400 for the first time. Took it to AD immediately afterwards and they said it was running 5 seconds fast.
Is it worth it to take it back to the shop to have them recalibrate the time? |

Wouldn't bother me; in all likelihood it will slow a bit with time and wear. Maybe let it settle in from the service and see how it does. Did you time it over a weeks period?

Yup. Not way out of line. But the choice is yours.

5 seconds fast?
It’s tolerable to me - but your question means you are possibly bothered and seeking info to see if your concern is justified.
If there was a warranty on the work, if the watchmaker is Rolex certified, if s/he has a Rolex Parts account, then you might bring it back. Remember COSC is a goal: COSC peforms seven tests as part of their certification. But the most commonly mentioned is the "mean daily rate" test for which a standard men's watch size mechanical movement, the watch must maintain an accuracy within -4 to +6 seconds of variation per day. But if I was the watchmaker, I’d reply that my work was within COSC. My 2¢ only - wait a few months and see how it actually performs by your own observations about once a week in normal use. If it’s wildly off, then return to the watchmaker. Remember the AD put it on a timer for just a few seconds and it calculated the error rate via algorithm. That’s not really valid in the different positions you’ll wear the watch. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

How did the AD "test" the accuracy after the service?

Then, check the time yourself against time.is and keep track day by day. Also experiment placing it in different positions at night--face down, crown up etc--and check the time in the morning. You might find that you can shave a few seconds off that +5s/d by how you set the watch at night. So if you do return the watch for finer regulation, you will have more information. How it keeps time on your wrist can differ from what a watchmaker sees on his timegrapher. |

Not sure how they tested it. They took it in the back and brought it back a few minutes later saying it needed service Because it was running 5 seconds fast. I didn’t tell them I just had it serviced.

Thanks for all the feedback. I don’t wear it often, normally I wear my Pre-Ceramic Sub 16610. I’ll track it over the long term and in various positions and see how it goes. Normally, I leave it in the watch winder.
