Your Thoughts on the 5196
What do you guys think?
Too big for a classic Tux watch? Possible alternatives? Thanks |

I like all versions of the 5196...especially in platinum. I think it would be fine with a tux

The 5196p is stunning. I would wear it with formal and casual.

Stunning piece, but the long lugs make it wear quite large on small wrists I suppose.

I tried it on along with the 5170, the long lugs of the 5196 and the generous dial size made it feel more like a 40mm watch than it's actual 37mm size.

Every time I put on the Platinum version thinking I'm going to love it, somethings missing.
Does wear larger than the number. |

I like the 5196 very much, but be aware it has no display back.

Nothing to see with the old tiny workhorse of a movement.

I love my 5196J. I wear it a lot more than I thought I would when I bought it.
I actually like the solid back case, it gives it a heavier solid feel to the watch. I think one of the best features of the watch is the brushed side of the case. The most dress watches has polished and this was one of the big reasons I chose it. |

Good Choice, although basically every Patek Calatrava is a good simple dress watch option, just get whichever you love that is within your budget.
I prefer the automatic Patek Calatrava, having the display back is a must for me at watches at this price point and if you cannot see the movement why are you paying for the decoration. |

Calatrava is entry level. I would shoot for the 5170. But it is your money so it is easy to spend.

Fell for the P the minute I laid eyes on it, it'll never leave . . .

I had the 5196R for about 5 years before flipping it. Loved it but never wore it and couldn't justify tying up 16K in the safe.
The watch wears larger than 37mm but I don't think too large for a tux. As far as alternatives I'd look at the Lange Saxonia or 1815, the VC Patrimony Traditionelle, or maybe an entry level FP Journe. |

The pictures do not do the P justice. Saw one and the dial is amazing. Loved it for a dress watch.

I would love to add the 5196P to my small collection.
It's a great looking piece and of course you have that diamond :)

Thicker than the 5196, but every bit as good, and then some. Iirc, their production numbers are similar to FPJ – circa 1000 per annum. |
