Your intro to Patek...

This thread is about when you first became aware of PP watches - not when you first owned one. For me it was in my teens in early high school when I would see ads for PP watches in the WSJs my dad would bring home from work. The Calatravas even in those old black and white WSJ ads were so beautiful I knew that one day I would want to wear my own. This was the year it happened for me, some 4 decades after I first saw one in pictures. What was your first intro to Patek watches?

Congrats! I learned of PP when trading watches in college. I actually bought and sold three before I owned one. I bought my first 10 years later. I have owned or traded everything and once you go Patek you never go back.

For me it was about 3 years ago in highschool when I was browsing the Omega website when we were supposed to work on a German essay when suddenly my german teacher stood behind me and said: Would you like to see a real watch? when he showed me his vintage Calatrava.

That's a very nice story indeed.

I got "introduced" to Patek a few years ago, I was getting interested in watches and only knew Rolex, Omega, Seiko and Bulova when it comes to known names. I was doing some research on watches and came across a website showing Eric Clapton's rarest watches, a few of them were Patek's and I was mesmerized by their beauty.

I then went to Switzerland for a week and while walking down a street with a lot of high end stores I went in a few jewelry stores. I tried a few Rolex watches, Omega chronographs...and a Patek 5116J.

I was amazed by its beauty, it was something I had never seen before on a watch and it made me open the door to the world of haute horlogerie.

Around 1988, watching Beverly Hills Cop II, on video, rented, naturally.

"Geez, look at that watch. Is that a Patek Philippe?"

Then researched it a few years later and came to the conclusion it is the ultimate.

My first taste of exquisite time pieces was also in the late 1980s, License To Kill, the infamous Rolex Submariner scene, my mum bought me a look-alike.

Carl, that was the watch that sold me on patek around 1988, it was at Torneau on 34st, i worked near by & would often take the opportunity to admire it, the version at the time that had a porcelain dial, it was pure class & elegance, perfection

I was 18 years old in 1985 when I stumbled upon the first edition Shugart/Engle Watch Price Guide in the public library. I was happy to finally get some info about an old pocket watch my grandmother's friend gave me (Hampden 12S 15J Nathan Hale for you PW guys). While devouring the book, I learned that a Patek Philippe was THE watch to have.

It finally happened in 1993 with a vintage Calatrava 2508.

Coincidentally, years earlier in a copy of a French Vogue Hommes magazine (1983), it was an advertisement for a gold Audemars Piguet Quantieme Perpetuelle that caught my eye. I still hold that watch in high regard, though I doubt I'll ever pull the trigger given my current interest in Patek Philippe...

I've always had an interest in watches. I don't know the day I first came across Patek. I remember being on vacation and seeing one (Calatrava) and admiring its simple beauty. The store owner, who was a watch lover, started talking in great detail about the watch. It really wasn't my style but I couldn't get over how subtle and beautiful it was. I loved that the watch didn't say "look at me" but was a beauty to look at. As I tried to find more information about Patek, I became more and more impressed with them and said one day I will own one. Well now I own one and trying to decide on my next. 6000g maybe?!? We shall see....

I was shopping for a breitling in the tyson's mall in virginia while visiting my sister for her college graduation about 6 years ago. I had heard the name PP but never seen one in person. So I was working up the cajones to pull the trigger on my $3500 breitling when I saw the gentleman next to me cutting a check that was about a foot long for $36,000. Can't even say exactly what he bought because I was not too keen back then on PP, but I remember thinking whoa! Funny part I will never forget is the guy kept telling the salesman, make sure they do not forget to send me the hat! Haha

Brilliant. Back in the days when I went to school we had all heard about these things called computers but none of us knew what one could do with them.

A good friend (damn him) wore Patek's while I kept telling him to buy a real watch like any one of the Rolex watches I owned. I hoped he would one day gain horological enlightenment and man up with a Sub or Daytona. He was just wasting his money on these watches with leather straps.

That was some Jedi mind trick he pulled on me.

A few years ago the Watch Snob had an article on the worlds finest dress watch which of course was a Patek Calatrava. I looked at that picture every day on my computer for a year before I was able to buy it. I'm wearing it now as this is being typed. Not a very sophisticated story but that was my introduction to P.P.

I've always been in to watches for as long as I can remember and my introduction to Patek was through the TV Show Entourage.

One of the characters mentions Patek and because of my interest in watches, I began learning more about the brand and the collection. And then of course, I started noticing the ads in magazines like GQ.

This was 2007-2008 and overtime, Patek became the pinnacle of watchmakers. I set a goal to own a Patek before my 40th birthday. I turn 40 next year and I'm fortunate that I now own 2 (5110G and 5396G).

I actually can't remember the first time I heard or seen a Patek Philippe. I think it might have been about when I saw a list of the most expensive watches ever auctioned and most of them were Pateks
