5726 or 5980 on bracelets for me. I need some complications, its Patek! 5711 is just a bit to boring to me... Although 5711r is a stunner... ahrg tuff choice.
A little story on buying my first Patek: Walked in to my local AD a couple of weeks ago to enquire about the 5726 on bracelet. I meet a very sweet, and rather good looking young lady who was very much into horology herself. They of course had waiting list for the Nautilus range, but she did say that local customers had a somewhat better chance of getting the popular models. I had decided on the 5726 so asked to be put on waitinglist and she told me a year or two wait, and I was fine with that. We talked some more about watches, independent watchmakers and a bunch of other stuff I can´t remember, and on the way out she picks up a lot different catalogues, magazines etc. for me to read. Happy with my visit and her treatment (I was dressed rather casually in jeans and shirt parking my cheap city bike just by the side of the entrance) I decided to write the manager about how I liked the way I was treated and wishing them a good weekend. The manager wrote back a couple of days later, saying he was on vacation with his family and just about to go into the pool, but he would see what he could do when he returned the next week. The following week I got another mail from the manager saying, that they do not get anymore 5726´s in 2018, but that he will call a contact in Patek and ask them to try and get one for me, but that it was not very likely... I wrote back that I was very thankful for his help, but had settled with the wait so no problem on my side. But it worked! Apparently a 5726/1A-001 is due in the august shipment with my name on it! Now, that is what I call customer service, since we have never met and I haven´t bought anything from them yet. I will post a picture or two when it arrives :-) |

Just curious. What if the decision was absent that factor too and just usefulness of the watch? I dont think the 5711 is a bad choice but i think heritage has a lot to do with its appeal. Its a major reason i have one, so i won't lie.

I will still be greedy and go for 5990 as it's the most expensive of the lot. Having complications also helps. |

I’ll say 5990 and 5711 equally.
5990 for the complications, and for pushing the design of the Nautilus. I think it was a brave step for Patek to remove the hinges and repurpose the left “ear” to be the pushers for the travel time function. I love the result, but can understand those that don’t like it. The 5711 has taken me 5 years to understand its popularity, but now I get it. It lacks complications, but is a super thin Patek sports watch with a true waterproof rating. It is the perfect watch for a daily wear and that’s where it scores its points for me. A few years ago on this forum it was known as the “ultimate beater” and that’s what the 5711 is. |

Actually on second thought, the ever elusive 3712 may be my top choice.
For now I will just have to "Settle" for my 5712 ;) |

5711 blue or 5726 black/grey on bracelet. I like the AC complication but no need for the moon phase. The cleaner dial and slimmer profile of 5711 might have the edge for me, in the end.

The heritage of the model definitely carries weight but I tend to lean towards simplicity with my watches in any case, so for me, none of the other models would be in contention. I see the correct amount of visual harmony with the date only complication. It’s the right amalgamation of utility and aesthetics which in my eye is good design. But then again, beauty is such a subjective matter. |

PM is the same issue. Its problem is its not SS and that is what a Nautilus is supposed to be. If no one knew what it was supposed to be would they still choose SS?

I reckon that most people (myself included) choose SS primarily because of price and then perhaps utility. But you are right about the psychological gravitas of consistent marketing and acute branding practices. This is why Rolex took over Omega in many consumers’ minds over half a century ago. |
