You can only have one…

Let’s entertain this wild possibility. Same price. Two chronos from Patek, with very different dial designs. One is plat and the other one is rose gold. One is automatic, the other one is manual, one displays the date, the other one doesn’t. What would be your preference and throw the why if you can.

I'd take the 5070P...

The RG Nautilus is much too flashy and I like the manual wind movement of the 5070 more. 5170P might be a contender given the better case size; but I like the 5070 movement more.

I don’t really like the 5070P, if it was a 5170P that would be a different story. The movement for the 5070 was a compromise and it is too small for the case. So would opt for the 5980 in this case.

5980 all the way - not a fan of the 5070 too big bezel / move to doesn’t fit.

5172 salmon on the other hand wins all the way over the 5980 - I can admire it but can’t pull it off

5070P. Too big for me but more elegant, traditional design wins it for me.

I'd much rather have a choice between 5170P and 5968A.

Don't like any pushers mess with the Nautilus case and like Nautilus thin and I prefer the look and size of 5170P over 5070P no matter its relevance.

Platinum trumps RG for me.

If the metals were reversed, then the Nautilus for me.

Have only had a single RG watch in 50 years.

5170P

I’ve never loved the Nautilus, and it’s worse, now, with the hype and nonsense.

I live in a temperate climate, and have come to prefer watches on leather. My 5270J and 5370P are my most worn watches.

In full PM, I’d rather have an AP or Rolex over the Nautilus.

I guess I have a lot of reasons.

Me, I would go 5070p.

The 5070p is more collectible. Production numbers around 200. Very low production and iconic design and good looks (for me at least). Lemania chrono. Its a great dress chrono. Finishing is better on it. Platinum case is better.

The 5980r is very flashy. If you like that then I would go with the 5980. I personally would go with the 5980A or a 5711r over it. The pushers are sticky (not a great movement imho). You do get a flyback feature.

5070p between the two options, and it’s not even close.

5070 of the 2, but I'd go for a 5970g for less

5070P is absolutely stunning. 5980 is a chunky scratch magnet so easy choice for me

The 42mm 5070P is too big for my wrist so I choose the 5980. The 5980 is thicker but sits very nicely on the wrist with the 40mm squarish case that looks smaller than the 40mm quoted diameter. I also love the Nautilus design.

That said I hope Patek reissue the 40mm-size lateral clutch chronograph like the 5170. Thankfully the current 5204 is still that size albeit thicker.

For me, it's very simple, the Nautilus is too visible for where I live and too big for my wrist. But I'm fond of the Nautilus models and this 5980 might be more appealing than the 5070P to me.

However, if I had to spend the money, I would go for the 5070P. You can find a Nautilus (this one or another) nearly anytime while the 5070P is rare.

The 5070P is, as everyone said, an icon of PP chronos now (volume sold, PT, size/shape, movement).

Now it depends also on the frequency one would enjoy each of them. If you clearly want to wear the Nautilus much more often, then the 5070P is maybe mostly a collectible piece you want to have in your collection because it's iconic. That's a nice watch to get but it's "collectability" versus "wearing enjoyment".

The fact that one would hesitate could maybe mean that he doesn't want the 5070P enough?

I don't like the 5980, but I like it a little more than the 5070. Unfortunately the 5070 is my least favorite version of this chrono series. The bezel is too wide/thick and just looks strange ... in pictures at least.
So the 5980 is my choice, but only just.

One like forever? I'd take the Chrono. Timeless. We don't know how a RG Nautilus will stand the test of time.

I would opt for the 5070P, but the two watches are not really comparable. Totally different to me.
