Favorite Aircraft Photos

I love this, now retired in April 2008, Lockheed F117A Stealth Nighthawk.

Quite ahead of it's time, and suprisingly, still looks like something out of a sci-fi movie.

Evidently, when the pilots first saw it, they thought it was a joke.

How time flies (sorry about the pun) but this first went into service in 1981

Nice shots, Steve. That aircraft reminds me of that Clint Eastwood film "Firefox" I think it was.

Its design still looks modern even though it was designed back in the 80's

How many of those have been shot down ?

As far as i remember only one F117 has been shot down few years ago in Serbia

JJ - I dont think Clint flew one of these didnt he fly a Russian jet in Firefox?

Frostie - I think you are correct. There were 2 other crashes: 1 from an auto pilot failure & 2 from a wing failure due to a maintenance error.

SSD - I thought you were folding up the wings so it could fit in your trunk (boot) to take home

That was a Russian jet. I think it was voice activated, he had to speak Russian to it in order to fly it. Great movie. One of my favorites.

Wow the F117A has been retired from service already? If anyone can find a good photo of a Baltimore Bomber I will be impressed.

Wow thankyou for posting those pics of the Baltimore. My grandfather flew in one during WW2. He was with the RAAF and was based in Italy, flying into Germany.

Since we're talkin favorite aircraft, I had to submit mine. Moby33 at age 22 in his favorite jet (then again, I'm obviously very biased toward the Tomcat):

Nah...I wish. My eyes went to hell my senior year at the Academy (had to stay 20/20 to fly jets), so I had to give up on my dream. This was taken the same year when I had the pleasure to spend 4 weeks with an F-14 squadron for training during the summer. Talk about the ultimate roller coaster ride...simply amazing...an experience I'll never forget (and probably never rival when it comes to adrenaline rush)! I'm pretty sure I dropped just about every Top Gun line when I was in the air or in the simulators (yeah I know, pretty cheesy...but it was still a blast). Cheers.

Here's a few of the Red Arrows. This was the first outing with my D200 and 300mm 2.8 VR. Back then I was not as proficient with NX2 or PS.

Here's some of Concorde's interior. Brenda and myself flew back from Bahrain on her in 1975. We've got the tie, place mats, salt and pepper shaker, cheque book covers, and a few glasses.

In a former life, I used to make the instruments he's adjusting.

Alway's thought this was a cool pic of a F/A-18C Hornet breaking the sound barrier. Details here.

I flew her from LHR to JFK back in '88. Loved the take off - almost straight up. Then looking at the deep purple of the sky and curvature of the earth from 60K ft. But the best part was being invited up to the cockpit. It was so quiet up there that talking in a normal speaking voice was like shouting.

I remember departing LHR at 10:30 AM, arriving at JFK at 9:30 AM, hopping a Shuttle, and being home in DC by Noon. Nothing like flying 4K miles in 1.5 hrs.

We were lucky because the captain who had flown her outward was sitting across the aisle from us. During the flight we got talking and he took us to the flight deck. Brenda can't remember the landing as she fell asleep due to exhaustion. The exhaustion of drinking all that champagne.

Here's another of my Red Arrows pictures. I have to own up to doing a bit of Photoshop magic on it. It's actually just one aircraft, turned and layered in.

Some of those pictures are awesome.

Adrian and Ed, I would have loved to have flown on Concorde...way above my budget and before my time...Adrian you flew on it the year before I was born.
