Icon5 16610 Subs

Hi guys,

I'm not sure if 16610s can be classed as 'vintage' yet - but I'm hoping (at least) one of you knowledgeable types can help... I'm asking about black bezeled 16610s - not LVs....

Any idea which series are the most collectible?

I see 'Swiss Made' and 'Swiss - T <25' dials - anyone know which are more desirable?

Thanks in advance (and apologies if this is the wrong section.)

I recently bought one and it has the flat S luminova dial which is supposedly rarer than others but when looking around I saw no difference in price between dial variations.

These were produced for a long period of time, I would guess there are a lot of different dials.

I don't believe that 16610's have a "more desirable" list that would be universal Some folks prefer the earlier tritium dials, and others prefer functional lume.

Aside from that, they are all pretty much the same but for small cosmetics. The post 2000 versions will have an SEL Bracelet

If you are speculating on future collectibility then a tritium dial/hands/insert and unpolished case (of course lol) would be your best bet.

Yeah, I'm looking to get an unworn/NOS full set and stick it away - rather than leaving money in the bank.

Tritrium dial - noted.

To me the best combo on these is solid end link bracelet with lug holes.

If you are looking at collectivity, why not consider a nice polar (ideally Tritium) 16570? The 16610s are a wee bit common to be 'collectible' in the near to medium term.

That's a good shout.

I already have an unworn 16570 (and a 16550) - but not Tritium.

I realise the 16610s were made for a long time and there's a lot about - but my thinking is that over the next five years or so, an 'unworn' example may increase in value (at least better than money in the bank might) - especially as everything now seems to be 'ceramic'.

Thanks for your comment.

Random serial examples are rare.

Here's an unworn Tritium dial from 1991 I've found - 30 years is *almost* vintage? Right?

I've really no idea if these will become 'collectable' or not - it's no different to buying stocks though - it's always a bit of a gamble. I figure they shouldn't be worth less in five years or so anyway - unless the world economy collapses or something - or there's a Zombie Apocalypse - in which case, stocks, shares, savings will be screwed anyway.

At least I get to own a cool watch.

You live in Sydney? Beautiful city - one of my brothers lives in Ryde, near the riverside park. I must go visit him again (if this C-19 ever gets under control.)

Random serial are the very last of the production.

I live on the coast about 25km from Ryde. Yes it’s beautiful here, feel very privileged to have grown up and lived my life in such a great place.

I think I'm going to go with Tritium and 'SWISS' only versions of 90s watches for now - they'll at least feel a bit more 'vintage'. Although an unworn 'SWISS MADE' at the right price will be cool too.

I'm gambling on 16610s, 14060s and 16600s (all pre-ceramics) becoming collectable in the near future - either way, they're cool pieces to own.

Lucky man living in such a lovely place.

Stay safe fellah!

The 16610 you found from Italy is in great shape but not NOS. It has no stickers on which means it has been worn. And if you look carefully at other pics on Chrono24, there are scratches on the underside of the lugs indicating the bracelet has been removed more than once. Still in fantastic shape, though.

Yeah, I guess finding a genuine NOS (stickered) Tritium version may prove difficult.

I was also confused by the ONE booklet in the description - NOS should have two.

Still, as you say (write) it's tidy enough.

X2. Love this combo on the Sub and SD. Only issue is it won’t come with tritium, although on 5-digit Rolexes I don’t think that’s as important unless it’s got strong patina.

Update (if anyone is interested)

I bought a couple of 'unworns' - ironically not a black 16610 (yet.)

While not quite vintage, the Submariner 16619 is discontinued and over 30-years-old. They are definitely classics which is what I prefer to call them.

My choice for a classic 16610 would be an early tritium model - preferably a complete set, which seem to sell very well in the marketplace. Expect to pay $7500 to $8500 for a nice tritium example.

I looked at a few tritium models - which still are my preferred choice. The problem is (or appears to be anyway) that any that have had a service, are now almost certainly fitted with luminova hands. Very few have survived with tritium hands it would appear. I'm still looking though.

Four-line 14060 might be a good bet.

And one of my favorites (I don’t own) as I see it as the “new” 5512.
