Accutron Tuningfork Collectors?

Are there any folks here who collect any of the vintage Accutron models with tuning fork movements?

Best Regards,

Thomas Carey

I don't know, but I remember my uncle having a tuning fork accutron. I would always love to put my ear up to it to hear it hum.

i had one, got it when i was about 12 or so, the first year they came out.

had it until we moved about 5 years ago. whoever bought it from goodwill must be very happy!! original box and all papers were included....

would like to get one back; always wanted a spaceview with the yellow hands, marked dial. been looking on the net, but never see anything exactly in line with what i want, and the ones that are very close are listed for about $2k these days....

Looks like an Explorer bezel. It's got a nice, clean, uncluttered look. Sharp.

I like it. Here's Scott Carpenter wearing one in 1962.

Bulova was a world leader whlen they came out with the Accutron..

I worked in an area in the late 60's where jewelry was not allowed so I got an Accutron Pocket Watch..

Still have it:

Thanks Neal, and thanks for asking about my son. The baby is doing great, he eats, sleep, eat, sleep, eat and sleep. I was outside with him today and I was surprised how many people stopped to see him. He liked the attention and the proud daddy here felt great with the attention also. BTW, I love those Pulsar watches man. After all these years it still keeps great time

Good to hear he is doing so well. I really wanted one of those Pulsars when they came out. I bought a new fangled LED calculator instead. I spent about a $100 on a calculator from Sears that only did addition, subtraction, multiplication and division instead. Honestly, I still wish I had that old model. I love that old stuff.

I just love this model as well as the Astro. There was an interesting looking diver as well. At any rate if you folks are interested I threw up a small Accutron forum here. http://watchandclockforum.com/viewforum.php?f=87

Hi ,I served my apprenticeship as a horologist and worked on some fabulous watches, Rolex,Omega,Longines,Patek Phillipe and Accutron amongst them.
Sadly I only managed to get hold of 2 decent ones, an Omega and an Accutron.Even more sadly I left the Omega out in the rain and it rusted beyond economical repair .I still have the Accutron but it needs servicing now and I have not been capable of that myself for many years ( bad eyesight)
I have not worn it for a while as I prefer to wear the gold Rotary that my son gave me for my 60th birthday a few years ago but I suppose I should get it serviced. Can anyone reccomend a good watch repairer,I have been told that Bulova UK tend to change movements rather than repair and I don't want that.

Is your Accutron one of those with the tuning fork movement? I do know of a couple of folks that specialize in those. Those do really require special test equipment that your typical watchmaker will not have. The prime reason is due to the frequency at which those movements operate at.

Thomas Carey

I bought one in 1971 or '72 I think. Loved it but have no idea what happened to it. 70's and early '80's are a bit of a blur.

I have three old accutron tuning fork watches. These have enormous sentimental value to me as they were my grandfathers and then my fathers before they were mine. I had two of them restored in the past couple years, and they are in my regular rotation. I will post pics when I get a chance!

I own an assymetrical stainless steel Spaceview, as well as a 218 in 14K retailed by Tiffany and Company that was given to my father in 1971, I'm also the last watchmaker to earn Bulova Accutron repair certification (which was at the Jos Bulova Watchmaking School).

I've been searching for a pic, but what must be among the most rare and expensive Accutron's would be the Tiffany clocks, designed by famous artist Jean Schlumberger, that were usually done is 18K. I've seen them mounted in forms such as sea anemonae, sea urchins, etc. Very exclusive, rarely seen at auction.

I have a 1966 gf RR Approved, a couple non-running 214s, one 14K, one stainless, and some 218 movements. While familiar with the 214, 218, 2181, 2182 and 2183, I know there were a number of other tuning fork movements, like, I believe for ladies watches, a 221 series, and also, I think, a 2313. As a graduate of the school, could you perhaps give me a list of all the tuning fork movements they made?

I have a 1976 RR218 that still runs daily (doesn't get much wrist time but I keep it running anyway) Wore it daily for 30 years including 18 yrs of Railroading. The jewler who does my battery replacements still carries a pretty good selection of parts (some new, some used)

I don't have one handy; and while the school was mostly funded privately by the Bulova family members there was no official tie in with the Bulova Company.

George,

I know a guy in New York who specializes in tuning fork Accutrons. He has all the needed Accutron equipment, as well as the parts needed to repair them (he just installed a NOS coil set in my gold filled RR Approved 214), and provides a complete servicing for a flat rate of USD185.00, plus any parts the watch might need. If you send the watch to him, he'll call you before doing actual repairs, if any are needed. Let me know if you want to get in touch with him.
