So, I have several answers for this depending on your price point.

For the under 10 k, It would be difficult to argue with the date just 41 mm. It’s water resistant to 100 m, stainless steel, looks good as a sport watch and it’s a dress watch and as we all know it’s pretty much indestructible.

If you want to go big time than it is very difficult to disagree with the platinum day date 40. It has all the characteristics of the date just but in platinum. Who can argue?

Lastly, if you want to go high Horology, it’s hard to argue with the Vacheron Constantin Overseas, even over the Nautilus or the Royal Oak. Here’s why.

The Overseas Izzy modernized watch, redesigned in 2016. It is 41 mm in size with a manufacturer movement that has Geneva seal on both the case and the movement. It’s water resistant to 150 m, more than Rolex or the Nautilis, is shock resistant and anti-magnetic to 25,000. But the best part is it has a proprietary unique bracelet release system which allows you to easily change between a bracelet, a rubber strap or an alligator strap without the use of tools.

Brown rubber

Blue rubber.

Alligator

Please note the watch time. This is how long it takes to change.

My 2 cents

Easy decision for me, and I don’t even own one yet. But I feel like I could put this on and never take it off.

If I have to wear one watch for the rest of my life, it'd better be discreet and understated for me to put up with it all these years. I could try with this guy.

Ironically, one that I did own and have since sold!

I really think that the 116500 is hard to beat as a do-everything only watch. As part of a collection, it didn’t get worn because I had watches I preferred. But as an only watch, it’s a no-brained for me.
