Cursed with a smaller wrist!!
Wife and I went to an AD today to start narrowing down my choices. It's awesome that's she's onboard with my desire to own a Rolex and we're juggling the books and searching the secondary market. This forum has been awesome in providing valuable info - thanks!
But talk about a MAJOR LETDOWN. 40mm and up looked like I was wearing a frisbee on my wrist! I've searched through the discussions and with the exception of a few negative comments about wearing a "woman's" sized watch most of you believe a 36mm is an acceptable dress watch size. But I don't need a dress watch, I need an every day "rough and tumble" proud to wear Rolex watch. So my fantasy picks of the 16610LV and 16613 and all in the Sub/GMT/YM are out the window. (dammit) I'm discouraged, but not down for the count! Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated. "Genetics, what can you do?" |

Steve, first, the DJ is a rugged watch. It's an Oyster, highly water resistant, and 36mm will never be a "ladies" sized watch. Sure, some women will wear them, successfully, but 36mm is and will be a classic size for a men's watch.
Second, how large are your wrists? Mine are right at 6.25 inches, and I don't have any trouble pulling off Rolex sport watches (outside of the of DSSD, that is). I think you may just need time to get used to the "larger" size, but once you do, you'll love it. This skinny-wristed gent can pull of the Sub Date and GMTIIc, and I think you can too. |

I agree with the Explorer... Perfect, and the same size as the DateJust..
Alternatively, the Air-King has quite a selection...even one with a larger bezel.. Then, there is the Turn-O-Graph.. a great looking watch in the Datejust Family now, that started out as the original basis for the Sub.. But don't get locked in that the DateJust is only a dress watch........ The Stainless Steel version on an Oyster Bracelet is as tough as it comes..

Steve, maybe you're just used to smaller watches. A 7" wrist should have no problem with any Rolex sport watch. Seriously.

I also have small wrists (about 6 inches). I had the same issues, but the daytona is a perfect fit for me. Depending on your price range, try one of those on. 36mm was too small in my opinion, and the 40 was slightly too big. the 38.5mm bezel of the daytona is a perfect medium for me.

Keep in mind also, it's not just how the watch looks on your wrist (within reason, of course), but how it fits into the overall context of your body. If you're a fairly good sized guy, a larger watch is going to look good, regardless of your wrist size.

absolutely...7" is absolutely fine for all Rolex sports models...
Steve, I think you'll get used to it...once sized correctly. Always difficult in store to tell until links are taken out. But..you must be comfortable

My wife, who has very small hands, inherited a large diamond ring from my mother. She didn't think she would be able to wear it. Within three days it was as if she'd always worn it. I bet that if you get what you want within a week you won't even notice the size!

You'll get used to it. I have 6.5" wrists and I think I can pull off my Sub and GMT just fine. I definitely could not pull off a Panerai.

I think you need to get used to it too. My wrist is about 6.4" and I wear the watches in my signature and have no issues!

What about a Tudor Submariner model 75090?
I picked one up from Steve Mulholland and it is great for my 6 1/2 wrist. I love it! After wearing GMTs and Explorer II's it is nice to have sports model that fits and doesn't feel like a lead block on my arm.

I'm between 6.75 and 7 and my Sub fits perfectly. I will say that I found the Sub-date just a bit too heavy, especially compared to the 14060. But I think the Sub, Explorer I, Air King, or DateJust would all fit you just fine. Don't be discouraged! The first time I tried on a 16610 I thought it was a monster, but I got over it.

My wrist is 7in as well and a 40mm fits perfectly. As long as the lugs don't extend over the edge of your wrist you should be fine. That said, if you like the smaller sized watches the Explorer I is awesome. The YM 35mm is nice too, but a little shinier, as is the TOG. The TOG as well has an all-white gold bezel, which is more delicate than the steel or steel/platinum bezels on the watches mentioned above.

Been there, done that. 1957 356A (Awesome vehicle) I terrorized the streets of Miami and Key West in the 1970's with it!
THANKS everyone, I'm going to another AD and really look at get a better feel for it. My Kreiger isn't large, 36mm (maybe) and the drastic change may be what I'm seeing instead of "feeling". Then again, perception is reality and if I don't like the 40mm there are plenty of other winners that will work. THANKS again. |
