Rolex GMT Master II Questions

I was wondering if the additional inserts for the Rolex GMT Master II came with the watch when its first purchased? or is it purchased seperately? If seperately, where can I get them?

I was also wondering what the differences were between the GMT II's that were produced in the early 90's and the ones that were produced just before it was discontinued.

Sorry for such newbie questions. My father just gave me a GMT II Coke (my first Rolex, possibly my first watch ever), which he bought in the early to mid 90's, but never took it out of the box after he purchased it. As well as coming with the certificates and booklets, it still had the stickers and the price tag on it. How rare are new GMT II's? I would feel bad accepting and wearing such a rare item.

Welcome.

Early versions of the reference would have used a tritium dial (look for "SWISS T<25") at the bottom of the dial instead of the more modern Luminova dials (SWISS MADE), as well as lug holes in the case.

While certainly not a rare reference, one in the condition you describe isn't something you see every day.

That it came from your father makes the watch worth more than the sum of it's parts.

Given it's age I would have the watch serviced before wearing it a lot.

Extra bezel inserts are not provided. Your dad would have chosen that watch with the bezel you see.

WOW what a great story!
The GMT II is my all time favorite, and I guess it can't be much better then this.

Congrats to a SUPER NICE time piece, and if I were you, I would with any doubt take the watch out of the box and wear it with pride.

Enjoy!

Cheers,
Joe

Oh, forgott; Welcome!

The GMT IIs only had COKE bezels up until when the GMT was discontinued(around 1999). Then the Pepsi and black bezels became available for the GMT II and the dial inscription said Swiss Made, previouslyT< 25.
In my mind the GMT II Coke is a classic model and the GMT PEPSI, the classic. All the bezels can now be mixed of course but the true derivitives stand as the real classics to my thinking and collecting.

Thanks. I was surprised that I actually liked a watch my father picked. We never have the same taste in clothing/accessories. Just goes to show you how timeless Rolex's are. No pun intended.

Rolex design does seem to transcend generations
