Serial Numbers
Why are Rolex Serial numbers a closely guarded item on the forum and in all sales?
Just curious. Mike |

I assume you are asking why people white out serial #'s in their photos.
The reason is by publishing one, you give someone a legit # they can copy and put on a fake watch. |

Thanks for the info.. another question if I may. How does Rolex track the serial numbers between private buyer and private seller? Is there any way to the watch you are buying is stolen??

They track where they send the watch originally, and when it is sold by that Dealer who reports it on inventory so they can get another in to replace it.. Then they track the watch again when it comes in for service...... but nobody can have that information except the person who has the service done; they won't pass it along to the next owner.. They do have a database of stolen serials that are reported to them by an authority. In the US they don't give out that information either and you must send the watch in for verification..

The concern is pretty simple. I know I will be in the market for another watch down the road.. I would hate to have a privately purchased watch confiscated at the dealer because it was stolen and logged with the manufacturer as such. Does Rolex get involved with this kind of action?? The flip side to this is how do I have confidence if I buy a watch from a private seller??
