Is Patek’s white gold rhodium plated or homogenous?
Hello,
I’m considering a white gold Patek, possibly a 5196g, 5296g, 5227g but have some concerns about the particular white gold used by Patek Philippe. It’s my understanding that Rolex makes it’s own white gold and it is a homogenous material and in no way Rhodium plated. But I have heard that white gold on other watches is rhodium plated and if you gouge it, you will see yellow gold underneath. Then I heard some Patek white gold watches are rhodium plated while some others are fully homogenous. Thanks for your help and contributions. I wanted a white 5711 for years and since that window is closed, I want to add a Patek and the current deals on Calatrava’s are tempting. |

Newer products I believe is solid white all the way through. Some of the older models in the current catalog like the 5146g are currently white all the way through, but some of the earliest models are plated.

To clarify, rhodium plated white gold is not yellow gold underneath the plating.
It is a ‘dirty’ white colour (best way I could describe it). |

Rhodium is not something that Patek uses for non while gold cases. This plating gives the watch a bit of a white/blue hue. Watch can be re-plated if needed, so there is nothing to fear about.
Yellow gold plated with Rhodium is 100% aftermarket invention. |

Patek replaced the Rhodium plated "dirty" white gold with homogeneous "grey" gold in the early 2000s.
When I was interested in a preowned piece from that period my local Patek Service Center said they are happy to find out if a particular piece had come plated or in "grey" gold based on the serial number. |
