The SD43 is an anniversary watch
It’s better engineered Not that most people would go the depth but it has better water resistance Right now it’s the less expensive watch 2mm difference is only a mental thing and wouldn’t really be that big of a deal or difference between the two watches

Really though, I do see the new Sub cutting in to the SD43 demand a little bit. Anyone remember the price difference between the Submariner Date and 40mm SD and SD4k years ago? I forget exactly, but it seemed significant from what I remember. Not that many people sprung for the 40mm SD over the 40mm Sub, some would languish in the case for years before all the hype hit. But it won't be like that, they'll both sell before they hit the case for the foreseeable future. Edit: I was incorrect, not a large difference. Who wouldn't have got the Sea Dweller?! |

I'd pick a SD over a sub, but not the 43mm one.

I think it's the best choice for those who prefer the SD.

SD & Sub price difference has grown over the years ;)
Edit: I was incorrect, not a large difference. Who wouldn't have got the Sea Dweller?!
When I got my first SD in 2003, the difference was $100 I think!! I think the sub was $4k and Sea Dweller was $4,100!! |

$9100 vs $11700 now. 2600 would make me think twice... and then purchase the SD43 anyway. |

The red text, matte dial, and coherent proportions drove my swap from the Sub date. Easily as comfy as the sub and I tend to wear my watches on the loose side. Not a dig on the sub, I’d buy another - but not at these prices. The SD is a bargain comparatively.

Just picked up my 43mm today. Though I have a Hulk and Gold Sub, this felt almost near the same wrist presence as my Gold Sub and liked the price point with black dial.
I am happy to have it in my rotation! |

I would choose the new SUB, It's got better visibility of the dial and new hands. The new SUB is also thinner than the SD43. The SD43 as a dive watch, the dial is too small, the hands are too small watch is too thick. I have the SD43, but if I was choosing today I think I would get the SUB for these reasons.

The SD43 ended up costing just a few hundred more than the Sub+tax would have set me back at MSRP, so it was an easy choice for me. I love the heft, red text, and matte black dial. Easily one of the best Rolex references for those with the wrists to rock it IMHO |

Fully agree.
the SD43 is better, its not that much bigger! it looks better, and its technically superior with a higher depth rating and a helium escape valave! i always wondered why the sub is was always more popular!

I am sure the OP was waiting 3+ years for further input before making his decision.
