Is It Still Worth Getting 16610 Now in 2020?

Saw that the second hand market has hike from $7k+ to $11k for 16610 over the past 2years...am really about to give up my lust for a traditional 16610.

Understand that it cost only about $3k in about 2003/2004 and price now is 3-4time more than value throughout its lifespan.

Originally wanted the land air and sea because i already have 16570 and 16710 currently.

Should i give up?

If that is what you want would not give up! Love mine and would not change it for a modern 116610 or 126610

I picked one up last month and couldn’t be happier. Even more so when the new one got released.

Is it worth to get 5 digit Sub. in 2020?

I think it's totally personal preference. For me, no because I like something brand new in perfect condition and the latest technology.

If it makes you happy, it's worth for you. I just got 126610LN and 126610LV yesterday at msrp, I think they are beautiful and really a good price when compare to other big brand names.

Bought a 16613 earlier in the year .Already owned a 116613LB.

5 digits have a charm of their own .

If it makes you smile ,go for it .

I just got one and love it. In the past 20 years this is now my third 16610. I seem to get other refs and always gravitate back to this reference. It's a classic.

This is unfortunately what happens. The best time buy that 16610 was when 116610 was in the catalog. now would be the best time to buy the 116610 as 126610 is entering production. Otherwise if you have to have 16610 then you have to look at the overall inventory, and complete set. The watch unless its damaged can be completely serviced and look new again, so don't feel like you need to get a NOS piece at a really high price.

I've been asking myself the same question. With my small Sub team I've been thinking a 16610 would make more difference than a 124060 but I still don't know. Glad I'm not in any hurry to buy anything so i'll just wait for more incoming threads, pics etc to decide later.

2000-2002 is best.

SEL and lug holes.

Wouldn’t trade mine for a new ceramic. That’s where I came from.

Absolutely it’s worth it if that’s what you like. I personally think the late 5 digits are about as good as they get for Rolex. As someone above me mentioned the early 2000s with SELs and lug holes are fantastic.

Additionally as someone else above me mentioned, look into the 16600, for some reason the prices are a little cheaper, and for me the lack of the cyclops is very aesthetically pleasing, and I feel it’s very comfortable. Plus personally I think it a bit unique and cool as they aren’t as common.

Also someone mentioned the latest technology with newer models which in my opinion is just silly. They aren’t electronic or digital, the basic mechanics have been the same for a really long time and the movements from the 16610 was exactly the same from introduction until just now when the 6 digit 116610 was discontinued. Still relevant and pretty modern, not highly tech at all.

I am in the same boat and I have been kicking myself for not buying the 16610 and 14270 that I wanted in 2002. You are looking at the nominal cost, though. After you take into consideration the impact of inflation on those 2003 dollars, it's not quite that bad. $1 in 2003 is the equivalent of $1.41 today. The 16610 was about $3,150 when I was looking at it in 2002 and was about ~$3500 by 2004. Inflate that out and you are at $4,935 today. So in real dollars, that watch hasn't even doubled if you can get a decent one for 7-9k. That's what I tell myself, anyway. lol I am also bummed that I didn't buy the brad new 16570 polar that an AD had for $3,600 back in 2010 when they weren't moving. Sigh...

There is no reason not to get a watch you want unless the price is over what you have available to spend. The watch will continue to do work just fine even though it’s an older model.

So worth it. I prefer the 16610 case size but went with a 6 digit sub for the benefit of the updated bracelet.

Well you don't have a time machine to go back to 2003/2004, so the price then shouldn't even affect your decision. If you really want it in 2020, then pay the 2020 price. If you wait till 2030, then pay the 2030 price. So just buy when your ready and have funds available and forget about the past prices.

That’s the way I look at it. Pay a fair going price and forget about it. Decent, well looked after pieces aren’t going to get cheaper.

OP, are you referring to pricing for the 16610 or whether the watch is quality wise, worth it? From a quality wise standpoint, newer references are to some, more worth it. I personally love the 16610, it's a timeless classic. Very fortunate to own a 16800 I bought before prices went went up. Would I still buy the 16610 at 10K plus? Depends on how badly I want the reference, though at that price point, I would most likely go with a 116040/116610LN.

If you really like it, go for it. Just find a good sample with the slight variations you prefer.

16610 or 14060M are Legends now, if you have the money do it. It was my first watch and is a great one. You’ll always normally get your money back in case you needed, buy the seller not the watch! Nowadays is a must.

I grew up wanting a classic submariner. When I was finally able to get one, I opted for the 116610. I thought I’d like the heavier weight, the larger size, the updated bracelet and the ceramic. What I found was that I just didn’t wear it that much. The bracelet fastener is taller off the wrist, the ceramic is a bit “flashy” looking to me and the heavier watch constantly slid on my wrist. I recently traded back for a 16610 and I couldn’t be happier. It’s the one I really wanted for years. In the end, just decide fir yourself what you want more and go for it.

It's a used watch and there are a LOT of them out there. No real point in spending tons to get NOS or something. Even a well used sub can be restored to like new for a lot less than paying for a perfect example. I still think it's the classic sub (along with the 14060).

Three beauties there. Don’t have to many 5 digits myself but what I do have I love. Speaking of which I gotta get my 16600 serviced. Waaaaay over due.

OP you can never go wrong with a 16610. It’s a icon. Classic. Timeless. Better act sooner then later

Is It Still Worth Getting 16610 Now in 2020?

Had mine since I was 15 in 1992. My parents got it for me so it’s special to me. I just got this factory LV bezel last week for fun. Can’t beat it’s shape and design. I also updated the bracelet to SEL at Beverly Hills RSC in one day. They kept my old bracelet. I have my black bezel stored as well.
