Good Deal on Explorer II 16570?
Hello all. I'm looking to purchase my first Rolex and came across a 2004 version of the Explorer II, Model #16750 in a local private sale. It comes as a full set and has only been owned by two individuals. The current owner purchased it around 3 years ago off his friend. Both wore it pretty seldomly from what I've gathered. It looks to be in excellent condition and after some negotiation, we settled on $7,000. Is that a fair price? The only reason I ask is because of how crazy the market is. Thanks in advance.

Seems fair. Any service history?

Well, if you know the market is crazy, you likely know what they are being listed for. They are being listed for significantly more, from my recollection.
Would I pay $7k for that? No. However, the market has supported that price and more. Most (from what I see) are selling for well over $7k. |

The price is fair if it's a complete set. The box is from a more modern Rolex.

Got a pic of the "full set" with warranty paper?

proceed with caution, as common wisdom dictates that (a.) you should trust the seller (whom you don't know in this case) and (b.) if something seems to good to be true, then there's something amiss.

OP
Seems like a good price. If it is a complete set, can you post other pics of what the watch comes with? As someone else said earlier “buy the seller”. Good luck. Edit: I was looking at your post again and I am not sure that the box you have shown with the watch is the box that originally came with the watch. Perhaps a seller used a different box. Just saying…. If you are going to post other pics, can you take a side view of the “pillow” that the watch is displayed? |

That’s not the right box for the year, so I wouldn’t say it’s a real full set.

Seems sketchy. I’d buy it unseen because I’m rich but for many others it could be risky swampland.

What is the sale date on the warranty paper? If 2004 then the box is wrong, as mentioned above, but if you're dating the watch by the serial number, then it might have been sold later in 2005, which is the year the boxes changed to the style in your photo. Also, I'd check the print dates at the back of the two booklets to make sure they're not more than a year or so older (and no more recent) than the sale date.
I have an F88 serial 16570 that was sold (in HK) on July 2005 in one of the previous boxes, and would have been one of the last sold here with that type of box, but the changeover was gradual worldwide. Looks like yours was originally sold in Taiwan.

I don’t know why everyone is saying it’s the wrong box. They were already coming with the new style box in 2004, often. I have seen quite a few with SEL and new style box.
Just check Chrono24 by year and you’ll see. |

OP, here's an article about boxes from 2005 that you might find helpful.

Even if the box is questionable you are still getting a clean SEL Explorer II with papers for 7k.
Don’t overthink it…

One thing that all the “wrong box” people don’t really keep in consideration is also that a lot of these watches sat unsold back then, and whichever box was current was added during the sale of the watch. They didn’t come with a box from the factory. I personally own watches that according to the serial number are one or sometimes two years older than the sale date.

OP
There is a serial number on the hang tag and the warranty paper, make sure those numbers match. I think you have a nice piece to buy. |

Buying a first Rolex to a private seller is something I would not advise especially when you don’t know personally the seller. For a clear mind on scam / authenticity / not stolen legit watch you should buy from a reputable dealer.

What's the old saying? "If it's too good to be true" and all of that. Not saying there is anything wrong with buying a used watch privately, but do your research and have a professional validate the sale and authenticity before you transfer those funds. |

I have to meet the seller when I am in town in a few weeks for a wedding. He is going to send me photos of the warranty paperwork with the serial number on it. He also provided an appraisal from a few years ago when he purchased it off his friend (the original owner). See attached. He was asking the appraised value and we settled on the $7k. I am 99% sure this is a legitimate watch and deal. He said he turned down several offers in the 6k range.

No funds have been exchanged yet. However, he is willing to hold the watch for me to do an in person deal when I get into town.
