I just got the call today after wating or three years for a sub date. Should I do it?

I am not in the same position financially as when I went on the list. I have the money but... How liquid is the watch if something came up. Would I lose 20% or more?

20% loss seems like a good bet if you were in a pinch.

If you have to worry about near-term finances then you should think long and hard about any expensive luxury purchase.

If you have the money and it will not put you in a bind, I would get it.

Financial peace of mind IMO outweighs something you can reasonably buy anytime. A Sub Date while desirable is not a rare or a hard to find piece even at retail with a wait. Perhaps wait until you feel comfortable with your personal finances, we've all been there.

In terms of how liquid the piece is, you could probably sell close to retail, perhaps a 10% hit if you need to turn it into cash right away.

Go for it. You can always sell Sub at retail at any time.

Same as keeping your funds in the bank but much more enjoyable

You certainly would not lose 20%, in the near future, in this current market. If you want it, get it. You can always sell it , if need be.

Amen to this. Your luxury purchase should, ideally, have zero effect on your quality of life, including mental health worrying about money. If you want to try to save face with your AD, say something like you're no longer interested in that model & request another (maybe cheaper?) one. In any scenario, I wouldn't purchase any luxury item if any other aspect of my life would suffer. As cool as Ferraris are, I'd rather be sleeping in my condo with all of my bills paid than in a LaFerrari & have to worry if I can afford the insurance.

I would say a 20% loss is a good bet. From what I have seen on various sites these are starting to trade to close to retail +tax. Personal choice on whether or not to buy it but if I had to ask I feel like the worry would ruin my enjoyment.

X2, besides the short term loss (agree with 20% ish), selling an expensive item for the first time without references is not easy and the process opens the door to potential scams. Not something I would do, but ymmv.

If you had to sell and you were fortunate enough find a private buyer you could do OK (+/- depending). Selling it to someone who has to sell it to someone else in this market of somewhat declining values is going to yield a bigger hit (I tend to agree with roughly 20% for this scenario). Rolex CPO, second hand, etc ain't doing it for their health. Depends on your threshold for pain and how you'd plan to get out from underneath it. Personally, I wouldn't buy a watch if I had any financial reservations. Meant to be enjoyed, not anguished. Your money, your choice. If you wait a bit you may be able to walk in and buy at MSRP, or buy below MSRP via the second handers. No crystal balls here, so no telling what's going to happen. I wish you well. One thing is for sure, that watch will be around somewhere whenever you decide to buy one.

I don't think you'd lose 20% on this piece. I think you may lose 10%. Hard to say what you should do. Ask your spouse if you have one what their opinion is. Financial peace of mind is definitely important overall.

I think the key would be to sell it yourself, like on eBay. The fee is less than the margin a reseller would want.

Not worth the headache. A watch like this should be purchased to celebrate something special. Sounds to me like you might be happy/excited for a short while upon pickup, then start worrying about the cash locked up on your wrist.

10% plus the tax you’re not getting back, which could be close to another 10%

This. Just don’t do it. Watches are not investments, they’re luxury toys. Have the financial peace of mind, it’s far more important than a toy.

If you have reservations let it pass. When you feel more confident in buying I bet you’ll be able to get one from an AD again.

As much as it is very tempting to make this purchase, if there is any doubt with your finances, I would not proceed.
When finances improve, then look for an opportunity to get a Sub.

Financial stability is way more important than a watch but if you think your long term security is ok then give it a shot you might not get the call for a while once the market picks up again

Fact that you are worrying should tell you enough.
And yes you will loose money and probably more than what people assume.
It’s not a sellers market today. There are 1400 offerings for this Submariner on Chrono alone … and all sitting.

Just a watch, no more, stability is much more important.

There's nothing I would buy if I had concerns about its value dropping after I bought it.
Especially a luxury watch.

OP, if you have financial concerns then you shouldn't even need to ask.

Good news to have that offer! Financially you have to be comfortable and it seems you're not. Watches will always be here. The stress of not having $$ when you truly need it will haunt you. Wait until you're financially comfortable! Good luck!
