First Rolex - Date model champaign dial with white font - is that unusual?
Hello!
I'm new to all of this. I got what I believe to be a reasonable deal on my first Rolex. It's a Date model from the early 80's. As I've looked around at pictures of other similar models after I've purchased it from a reputable jeweler, I've noticed I haven't seen any other champaign color dials with white print. Sorry about the photo quality. Should I be concerned? Thanks! |

Shouldn't you have researched and asked BEFORE you bought it?

Well, as helpful as you response is... I'll provide some more background. Maybe it'll help someone else who might have a cogent reply. The jeweler I bought it from is reputable and I did have the watch's authenticity as a Rolex verified by a separate AD and service center. I just casually observed that as I looked at other Date models out there, I only saw one other champaign color dial with white text. I thought this would be a good forum to get more insight, as I'm curious about it.

A better/clearer photo in natural light would help. That dial looks gray to me. Try Googling the watch's reference number with "Champagne dial" (not Champaign).

Thank you for that insight! I will see if this helps. If not, I'll take a picture tomorrow during the day. I appreciate your feedback.

If you bought it from a reputable seller and have had it verified by a Rolex AD and a Rolex Service Centre I am not sure if I can evaluate it any further.
Edit. That second pix looks OK to me. End link gaps show a lot of wear and the case looks like it has had its share of polishing.

Thank you! I just thought it was fascinating that 99% of the others for sale out there had black text. I'm going to keep wearing and enjoying it!

I think I missed something in this post. Either way, enjoy your new watch.

I've never seen the white lettering either, but the font looks authentic and everything is spelled correctly, too.
Here's mine from 1974. I'm told it has a service dial, though.

Yours looks extra sharp, Grady!!! The black strap sets it off nicely.

I think it looks great and actually there was one right next to it in the display case with the bracelet and I chose this one.

Can't say I've ever seen a white lettered one. Here's my 15038 Date. It's been serviced and polished, new crystal and crown. Polished. New Rolex alligator band and Rolex 18k gold clasp.

That's great! However, with that being the case, I'm a little confused as to why you'd ask the forum if you should be concerned. If an AD and a service center both authenticated the watch, what would be the potential concern? It sounds like you're good to go.

What I'd be concerned with is the gap between the lugs and the endlink. Wow, haven't seen such a wide gap before.
Also... if you're new to all this how do you know you got a "reasonable deal"? I usually like to check with more informed people before making a purchase. Regardless, cheers to your purchase. Those 80s era Datejusts are timeless and will look great no matter what the occasion.
