The jewels are just friction bearings cups, now the harder the material that the bearings were made of. The lesser was the friction of the bearing, and various gears and timing wheels, enabling better control of timekeeping and as a bonus, the life of the bearing was considerably extended and giving longer movement life. The jewels used today are synthetic rubies, but don't necessarily mean the more jewels the better the movement.
There is a very interesting Article (called 83 jewels to many) in our Rolex resources links just scroll down a very interesting read.

Flick, you stated:
"You people and your superiority complexes. You and the REV seem to share this trait as I've read these forums the last few weeks."

May I ask why you feel this way? We promote friendship and share information and since we have or had the information you were looking for you were directed there rather then trying to explain it again.

It's a common courtesy to do what padi did for you (directing you via a link to an area of our forum where what you wanted to know was explained, now if this seems to good to be true then you are digging way to deep as we are not trying to offend you).

I hope you find this information informative and conductive to your inquiry.

Please have a nice day :o)

Well Mamas more of a tinkerer, than anything have done a few repairs on some old movements. Can regulate oil movements but a technician definitely not.I Have friend who is a watchmaker he is very good, and I have stripped and put back together a movement with his guidance. But my eyes and fingers are not as good as they were,if you know what I mean.I have had a interest in mechanical watches since a very young boy,and still think they are a mechanical marvel.

Well, I could tell you about that! It was very "enlightening".

One minute I was eating my steak raw, the next minute somebody had to invent the grill as soon as possible!

LOL - Well, does this ring a bell:
