Rolex repair questions.

Greetings,

First post here.

I noticed someone had cited a good firm to repair another make of watch, and in the UK. Has anyone had a good experience with a "send away" Rollie repair service in the US? I live in NYC and the shops here are WICKEDLY expensive. My sub just decided it had had enough of working, and I bet the crown is messed up, or something equally dire.

Secondly, what do you think is a fair price to pay for a link being reattached to a jubilee bracelet? Should be fairly cheap, no? And do you think it makes sense to spend big money tightening a vintage bracelet? What do you think that might cost?

Thanks for any insight into these questions!

Best regs,

Sub

Welcome to TRF, mate. Glad you found your way to our merry madhouse.

As for repair places, sounds like you should take your Sub to RSC in NY. I don't recall their address but you should be able to find it in theYellow Pages. Why mess around with it?

Cheers.

I suppose I should...just can't bear the thought of plunking down another $500 for a repair. I think there are some good watch-repairers who will give a superior warranty to RSC's.

The inlay on my Sub has yellowed...is there a common repair to whiten them? Or would that involve replacing the face? I wouldn't want to do that.

If you don't want to replace the dial, don't take it NYRSC. They will want to replace everything. As for other good repair places, I can't really help you in NY. Not my stomping grounds any more. Maybe some of the others here can help you.

Thanks.

I'll actually be working for half a year down in DC. Is the repair scene any better down there?

There are a couple of good ADs here who do repair work. I also have an independent repair guy who is excellent. He's in Bethesda, if you know where that is.

If you want to PM me when you get ready to come down here, I'll give you some names of possible places.

Welcome to TRF Sub. I believe you have the right to refuse replacement of parts at an RSC.

Thanks everybody!

I've gotten an estimate today of $299 from a very reputable shop for the work. 2 year guarantee, and complete working over of the piece (not that I would be able to tell, I suppose).

As expensive as that sounds, it's pretty reasonable in context!

Best,

Sub

It may not be convenient, but I've got a very reputable watchmaker in Philadelphia that I've used for other watches. My Rolex is still under manufacturer's warranty, but I've used him for other watches including TAG and I've referred many of my friends to him and they've all been pleased. He was originally referred by a Rolex AD in Philadelphia. He's a second generation watchmaker and a nice guy. If you're interested send me a private message and I'll give you the info.

Thats quite a reasonable quote, servicing a Rolex is no harder to do than any other watch to the experience watchmaker.Especially if he can access Rolex parts,if you are talking about any vintage watch.I would leave dial alone, all original is best. Now for a case polish and bracelet refurbish have not myself seen anything, that can equal that done by Rolex.
