Needs help choosing

Hi everyone. I just graduated from high school and my dad is asking me what gift I want. I told him that I want one of his watches. He asked me to choose between his rolex date and his breitling emergency. Breitling looks cool but is big for my wrist. Rolex is a ROLEX but is a little small for my wrist and looks too formal (2 tone) for me. He has a rolex gmt2 but it's his favorite watch so I'm only choosing between the date and emergency.

Both watches look great but are very different from one another. Breitling emergency is bigger (44 i think), has titanium bracelet, and blue dial. The rolex date is smaller (34-35?), two-tone oyster bracelet, and white dial. I'm really divided between the two and can't decide what to pick. Rolex for me (and for most) is the ultimate watch but who would believe that a 15 year old kid wears a real one?

I currently use a tag heuer (gift from my dad too :) ) as my everyday watch and when I asked my friends about what watch to pick, most of them said that i should go for the rolex.

What do you guys think? I don't know how to post pics so i'll just post the links:

breitling emergency:
http://www.breitling.com/en/models/p...nal/emergency/

rolex date: Can't find a decent link (pls see the most bottom watch 15223 wbro)
http://www.swissluxury.com/rolex-wat...old-oyster.htm

Thanks.

Hi John,

A big welcome to TRF. The two watches are 10 mm apart, the Breitlnig at 44 mm would be just too big, but the Rolex Date at 34 mm might be perfect for a 15 year old.

I'd go with the Rolex.

Best of luck in your final decision and keep us updated.

Cheers - JJ

Hi John welcome to TRF looks like a trip to a AD is advisable, try a few on see which one you like most.Remember you are still growing and a Rolex could last a life time. And something to pass down to the next generation, but the ultimate choice is down yourself, good luck.

Welcome to TRF John. For me it would be the Breitling, it would be a unique watch for a person your age and very cool. I see high school grads all the time with a Rolex, I saw an emergency watch the other day for the first time on the wrist and it looked awesome!

Congrats on the graduation too.

Hmmm. Okay, as much as I love Rolex, I'll agree with Daren. At your age I would have chosen the Breitling because it would have suited my wardrobe much better.

However, if you want to take the long view, take the Rolex because it is more likely to hold its value than the Breitling.

Welcome aboard, by the way, and congratulations on your graduation!

I would go for the classic, Rolex. This is the first watch of a collection that will last you many years. Trends come and go, but Rolex stays.

Hi, John and welcome to TRF. Glad to have you here.

As for your choices, that's a tough one. They are two very different watches. As others have said, you should try them both. And since you already have them readily available, why not try each one out for a day or so. See how they feel when you wear them out and about.

My preference would be for the Rolex. It's a timeless watch that will never go out of style and will always look good, no matter what you wear it with - it will go with jeams or black tie. I think of the Breitling Emergency as more of a gimmick watch. It's got a neat function, but unless you are an explorer who might run into a problem in the wild, that function is of zero usefullness - and if you accidently set if off, you could be subject to a federal fine.

But ultimately, the choice has to be yours alone. Let us know which one you do choose.

Thanks for the replies guys...and thanks for welcoming me to this wonderful forum (though I don't own a rolex yet )

I would definitely try both of them out first. I'm wearing the breitling right now and I'll wear it when I go out later. Tomorrow, Sunday, will be rolex's day. I will wear the rolex when I go to church.

Enjoy the weekend guys. I'll let you know on my decision.

Oh guys I forgot, how do I full wind a rolex? It's not running right now coz my dad hasn't worn it for a long time. I haven't had a perpetual watch before and I don't want to mess it up. Can I break a watch by overwinding it? And how many crown turns should I do to wind it fully? Thanks

I'm not a Rolex expert (yet), but from what I've read it takes 40 crown turns for a full wind and you can't over-wind a Rolex.

BTW, I would go with the ROLEX!!!

John, don't worry, you can't break a Rolex by overwinding it. Just pull the crown out to its outermost position (that's position #3) to set the time, push it back in once to position #2 to set the date, and push in once more (to position #1) to wind it. About 40 turns will give it a full wind. Then push the crown all the way in and screw it shut (don't over tighten it, just until you meet resistance). If your watch does not have the quickset feature (position #2 for date setting only), then you'll have to pull the crown out to its outermost position and turn the hands through full 24 hour cycles to set the date.

John,

You're a very lucky young man. My 16 year old son is very happy to be wearing a Tag Heuer chronograph, since most of his friends are wearing Fossil watches or Timex watches. For a 15 year old to be wearing a Breitling or Rolex, you can't go wrong with either watch. Choose the one that "feels" right.

However, I'm perplexed how a 15 year old is graduating high school. You're in the U.S. and at 15 years old you should be too young to be graduating high school. Aren't most high school graduates at least 17-18 years old??

Guys I decided I would take the rolex. I just feel that it looks better on my wrist. I have a small wrist and a 34mm watch just feels/looks right than a 44mm one. I'll try to attach a pic with the watch on my wrist.

Doc, yeah almost all of my classmates are older than me. But believe it or not, I'm just the 3rd youngest in my graduating class

Here's my new watch i apologize for the low quality pic. I just used my cellphone in taking this pic. I'll take more decent pics later.

Congrats! I think you made the right decision. Be sure to tell your dad how much you appreciate such a fine gift. I hope to be in a position where I can offer my son something as nice when he graduates.

Good choice, John. I think you'll be quite happy with your decision. Wear it in good health and enjoy it, while you start to build your own collection. At your age, it will take a few years, but rest assured it will happen, now that you've been bitten.

Good choice on the Rolex.
I missed giving you advice, but I would have taken the Rolex.
Like others said, that one will last you a lifetime without any worries.
The Breitling, eventually needs that battery replaced, I understand that is about a $600 replacment bill. Not good, in my opinion.
Enjoy that one in good health

$600 to replace a battery in a Breitling? Wow, that's a lot of coin for a battery replacement
