having just been fortunate to get myself a Red sub i've noticed the bezel doesn't 'click' in the same way as my 16610 or DSSD, excuse my ignorance but, is that down to the Red sub's age & easily remedied at service or just a characteristic of an older watch ?

Chad,

Prior to the debut of the reference 16800 Submariners used a friction fit bi-directional bezel. As opposed to a "click-spring" found in latter versions these eariler examples (1680 and well as the 5512/13 and others) used a flat round spring to hold the bezel at the desired position. One puched down slightly and turned the bezel (either way).

Realizing this could be a problem for divers should the bezel be inadverently moved during a dive Rolex changed to a bezel using the click spring (at 120 clicks) and changed to a uni-directional design. The theroy being should the bezel get bumped the diver would have more air than was read.
