Wearing my vintage Tudor Sub as I type. Been wearing it last couple days and I have four 6 digit Rolexes including a DaytonaC I picked up from my AD over the weekend.

Owned many 6 and 5, but now only have 5 digits. 5 digits are like your worn in favorite pair of jeans or sneakers. Although I have to admit 6 digits look better in the display case.

I love the 5 digit references, although the brackets do feel cheap compared to the 6 digit, and almost every other ‘luxury’ watch. That being said, the bracelet is extremely comfortable and I haven’t heard of one failing.

Took me about 1 week of both to brake up from a 17 year affair with a 5 digit. There was no way I would be wearing it in rotation. I actually tried a few days and it’s short coming screamed too loud. Never looked back and only added more 6 digit watches. To say the clasp and bracelet is a huge upgrade for Rolex is a understatement.

My feelings exactly.

I've owned 4 or 5, 5 digit subs and I now own a 6 digit. Somedays I miss the charm of the 5 digits. The case, chamfers, brushing and lug holes. If I went back I know I'd also miss the quality feel of the 6 digits. So I'll stick with the 6 and just remember the 5 digits, fondly.

One thing I dislike on the 6 is the engraved rehaut.

I only wear the five digit or four digit models. The only six digit model I enjoy is the new Daytona ceramic.

The offer was politely declined. As much as the advances have been on the six digits, in my opinion the five digits have much more soul.

For comfort I found my 14060 much better than the maxi cased 114060. On the other hand my 116600 makes the 14060 feel like a very old watch; I find it very comfortable. I much prefer the newer SD4K. My SkyD caused me to rid myself of both my 16700 and DJII which became superfluous. And just to complete the confusion; I have an 116500 which doesn't really do much for me. I actually think I prefer the new Mark II to it from price, functionality, and looks perspectives. The larger presence, glow in the dark tachymetre, date, and easily adjustable bracelet (comparable to the glidelock) make it a real joy to wear. Being able to acquire mine for less than $3K was really nice (talking BBR pricing).

Lots of 5 digit models have it also. It's been around since at least 2004. Most of the Subs had it by late 2007.

I find the 5 digit references more comfortable due to the lighter bracelet/clasp and (usually) lack of SEL

I always get delightful comments when I wear my 16610lv. Offers to sell or trade it. Some want to see it. That stands to reason. 5-digit references are not made anymore so of course it will draw interest versus something that a dealer gets monthly and readily keep in their dealer case.

That doesn’t make it a better watch.

It’s just a novelty.

Bona Fides: my 5-digit warriors - 16622; 16610lv; 16710; 16610

Probably true enough— the 5 digit appeal for me is definitely emotional with a little nostalgia. But I buy watches with my heart so that’s good enough for me. The image I have of the Sub is from watching Connery as Bond, so the slimmer 14060 reminds me of the that watch. I’m not going to buy a 6538(?), so I got the poor(er) man’s version (-;

20 years from now when the 7 digits are out we’ll be talking about the charm and grace that we lost with the 6 digits.

It depends on the watch for me. For the Explorer II I prefer the 5 digit hands down. For Subs and GMTs it’s a closer call.

Only if the 7 digits are even bulkier. We won't if they go back to classic proportions.

I was looking for a 14060 as my first Rolex when a 6 digit SubC deal appeared at a price that I couldn't pass up. I loved the 6 digit but I still had an itch for the 5 digit. Well I found my 5 digit sub which lead to my 16600 and my 16710. I think I'm just a bit "old school" and prefer a little less bling nowadays. The comfortable shoes and jeans referenced earlier here really resonated with me. Of course I told myself when I bought the 14060 that I would sell the 6 digit version but...... I think most would agree that they are two completely different watches worthy of sharing one watch box.

5 Digit vs 6

5 digit with a little bit of GMT 6 digit mixed in is the best combination. With this clasp I find there is no difference in bracelet feel between 5 & 6 digits so that argument goes away.

I prefer the 5 digit watches my 16610 started life as a LV and then swapped out the bezel to the LN and now has equal wrist time between my 14000 Air King for me a perfect combination

Have owned both.....really tried hard to keep the 6 digits in the line up and they were all gorgeous looking timepieces. In the end they were sold and I am content with 16600 and 16710. For my lifestyle, comfort and looks the 5 digits have always captivated me and they were the models that I grew up admiring the most.

Cheers

Pros and cons with five and six digits, and in many ways comes down to personal taste. The six digit are arguably better constructed etc, particularly in terms of the later bracelets, not that the older ones are that bad!. The five (and four) digit feel more aligned to the original tool watch concept however, though many might disagree. Have had the six digit Explorer, SD and Sub non date and only kept the Sub - the four and five digits just work better for me.

I also prefer the 5 digit vs. the 6 digit for the tapered lugs. I do have to admit that the bracelet and clasp on the new watches imo are superior. The 5 digit is more classic to me since I grew up aspiring to own one.
