Vintage Rolex Red Sub for 50 years?
Hi folks,
Today I just met my uncle(My dad's friend) and we had talked about the watch that he's waring. He told me that he's been wearing this watch for 50 years and Never Service and the watch is still running perfectly. (incredible) He said he bought this watch only $1,000 at that time and now he thinks that his watch can be sold at $2,000 - $3,000 only. My question is How much is the value of this watch at this time? Should he send the watch to service or nah? Thanks |

Hello, It should be worth a lot more.I see peeling on the edge.Is there any way that the typical marks from service in dial be produced without having one?

Wowsers, have you just seen the other thread about servicing one of these? cost about 2,000 dollars for service as needed some work but well worth it!

first of all its not one of the early ones so its more like 46+ years instead of 50
also they are worth now between $10K - $20K depending on condition box papers etc... some worth more (tropical ,early meters first etc...) |

Oops, some nasty chipping round the edge of the dial, this would normally suggest that the dial was removed at some stage but as the watch has never been serviced then it will remain a mystery, most likely some moisture has entered the case. This however means you've got a number of paint flakes/dust in there and really should be adressed by a competent watchmaker if your uncle (dad's friend)wants it to last another 50... nice sub!

Chipping on edge of dial means someone at some point opened this up. If not then movement screws may be loose and dial/movement may be moving slightly when he winds it and or unscrews crown. This watch is still a nice example of a mk4 red sub and once serviced should bring him years more of enjoyment! Definitely get it serviced would be my suggestion. Some watchmakers can/will address the dial chipping also.

Wow, the lume on the hands has turned several shades darker than the lume on the dial.
It's too bad the dial has peeling around the edges. |
