Sub or Sea Dweller - completely torn????????
I am looking to buy my first Rolex and am completely torn between the Sub date and the Sea Dweller.
Which would you recommend and why? |

I have just one rolex, I just bought three weeks ago and it's a sea dweller. I liked it because of the clean looking face and the cool little useless helium valve on the side. I also liked it because it was thicker and heavier, which made it feel very sturdy and well built. Not that the Sub's not, the SD just felt better for me. If I get another one it will defintely be a Sub.

I would come in on the side of the Sub Date. Got a TT blue, and I LOVE IT!!! I have never owned a Sea Dweller (don't need the added depth, since I don't actually dive - heh heh). Take a look at mine below, but if it doesn't "speak to you", then it is not the right choice. Ultimately, it comes down to you, my friend! Good luck in your dicision.

It's definitely a tough call-they are two of my favorites!
I ended up with the Sub date-just because I (and this is my own PERSONAL opinion!) have always viewed the Sub as the "classic" sports Rolex. It does really truely boil down to the smile factor-go to a local AD, try them both on, and when you're looking at it on your wrist in that little mirror they have on the counter glance up quickly and see which one is making you grin the most... |

Well, if you like tradition, it would be the Sub Date, but otherwise, go up the evolutionary ladder to the SD!

I was in the same boat as you are three months ago. I liked both but I liked the clean look with no cyclops and the fact that not a lot of people have them compared to the sub. It is also very low profile in that it doesn't scream Rolex! I wear mine everyday and only one person noticed my watch in the three months that I have had it and I think I like it that way because I bought it for me and not to impress others.

i only own 1 rolex, and am unlikely to ever buy any more. I was in the similar situation to you and i bought the SD. It is the ultimate dive watch IMHO and it is a watch that i will keep forever. buy the SD you wont reghret it.

First of all, historiian, let me apoilogize for the rest of the louts and misfits here. No one has bothered to welcome you to TRF. Let me be the first to do so. Glad you found your way to our merry madhouse. Don't let this be your one and only post.
As for your question, of the two, I would go for the Sub Date. It is the quintessential Rolex. The cyclops is the thing that makes it stand out as a Rolex. Unlike some of the others here, I really like the cyclops. Personally I prefer the all black GMT-II, but the black Sub Date comes in a close second. The best advice any of us can give you is go try both on. One of them will smile at you more. That's the one to get. After all, you will be the one wearing it. It's got to feel right to you.

Historian,
I love the sub: the essential sports model. .... and I love the cyclops: I think Rolex's look "wrong" without the little glass bulb (except for the Daytona) But hey, you've got to make up your own mind - you can hardly go very wrong with the two you've looking at Or the LV of course.... |

Greetings Historian.
The submariner just embodies what it is to be a Rolex watch. However, everyone I have seen that has a ''rolex'' wears a Sub W/date..... Thats why I got the LV, after owning the Sub date a few years ago. The SeaDweller is different, heavier, but no identifying date window that most (like myself) love to see the 2.5 magnification of the date to begin with. Sure they are a little similar in nature but U decide what you want. DOn't care what anyone else thinks and you will be fine, although the SD will be a road less traveled- |

The Sub Date is the icon and probably the most commonly sold Rolex sports model. You will see them everywhere. It's a great "first and only" Rolex.
If you want something less common, that few people are likely to notice, go for the SD. Case in point: my ex-wife, who notices everything, still hasn't figured out that I replaced my original Sub with the SD last year.

SOmetimes elegance is in subtle nuances of a classic time piece. The SD is rugged and is TRUELY a dive watch not a half ass jack of all trades. |
