Interesting that in my local AD (in Cowes), SDs spend time in the window (and can get great discounts) where subs are still very sought after and discounts are only given to regulars. Forget getting a walk in LV (or even one in a few months).

It just depends where in the world we live I guess, but lets not kid ourselves that there aren't hundreds of thousands (and more) of both watches around.

Now, my next door neighbour's Double Red SD is another matter! (I'm first on his list, but I doubt he'll ever sell it... he bought it for £260 in 1968!)

Tell him it's old and you'll give him what he paid for it

Or...to just send it along to me. I'll take care of it for him.

Which would you recommend and why?
Tough choice between these two.Just so you know i dont own a Rolex but i will be getting one fairly soon.I have a Breitling and a Panerai and because of this i like the Sea Dweller because it has more substance and heft to it.Having said that there is something that draws me to the sub date.It oozes Rolex in my mind. The sub date is slightly cheaper and more common from what i hear on this forum.
Things to ask yourself;
do you like the cyclops on the sub date?
do you like the small date display on the Sea Dweller?
Do you prefer a slightly heavier, bulky watch?
Is resale an issue?

Either way you will be happy. Here in Australia we dont see many of these two watches in AD's so i would probably get what i could, and then wish you got the other.
Good luck and remember its a win-win situation.

Well, I've bought the Sea Dweller. Thank you very much for all of your input.
It's a great watch, beautifully made and a great deal smaller than I was expecting (compared to my Breitling Seawolf Avenger and Doxa Sub750T Sharkhunter anyway). I figured that as I already own an Omega Seamaster professional (James Bond, auto, full size) which like the Sub to which it is frequently compared is WR to 300m. Because of this I thought I would go with the SD. I think I made the right choice. Outstanding but damned expensive (could this be the new advertising slogan for Rolex!!).

Hi Robby,

Welcome to TRF. Rather a dramatic entrance there, pal. While the PO is an excellent watch, it may not come anywhere close to either an SD or a Sub-date.

But, in all fairness to the PO, you would save a lot of money and probably pay just HALF for the PO as compared with what you'd fork out for either of the Rollies.

Cheers - JJ

Icon11 Omega and Rolex

Thank you for the civilised welcome JJ.
Let me explain......
Three months ago I bought a brand new DJ 116233 ,new style jubilee clasp, white face with romans. Absolutely stunning watch! It gains only 2 seconds a week! So then I went in search of a "casual/sports" watch for those times I am not in business meetings. I thought I really wanted a sub but when I tried it on it left me cold. It looked like, well.....nothing. So then the AD suggested that if I was open minded enough I should try the 45.5mm planet ocean. I did and was so impressed with the feel, the weight and god...what a great build quality. Guess what? It also gains only 2 seconds a week! Long live Rolex DJ and Planet Ocean 45.5mm Black.
Kind Regards from England
Robby

Congratulations on an excellent choice, historian. That baby should give you many years of good and faithful service. Wear it in good health and enjoy it.

Hi Robby,

While we've seen quite a few pics of the all black PO, some pics of that gorgeous new DJ of yours would be more than welcome.

Thanks in advance - JJ

Sorry I missed your first couple of posts, Robby. I was so busy congraulating historian on his purchase that I didn't see yours. Welcome to TRF. Glad you found your way over to our merry madhouse. Stick around and have some fun here.

Oh, and as JJ said, do post some pics of your DJ. I am a great fan of white face Roman dial DJs. Got one myself (plus a champagne dial DJ with printed Romans).

Hey Ed,

Since we are on the subject, how about a nice close up of that DD on President of yours....the one with the white face and Romans.

Thanks - JJ

Want a Daytona

Thank you for your kind comments.
The DJ will always be the most treasured out of the three, although I have had the gold Omega for over 13 years. I think it has similar styling to a Daytona. That's the one I really want .....but at about £6000 the Daytona may have to wait, unless I sell my Harley Davidson Road King.....god what a choice....sell your mother or sell your sister!!??

Could we please have a close up of the DJ clasp and bracelet?
