Three under Five
Say that, hypothetically, you came into a small sum of money from a relative, and you wanted to use it to purchase your first serious watch. The budget is only $5000, which I know in this hobby won't get me very far. I want something mid-sized and all-purpose, with minimal detailing, and I'd like to get something vintage if possible (60s or 70s would be amazing). I'm thinking maybe of a Datejust Ref 17000 (even though I know it's a later model), but I wanted to ask the experts here if they were in my shoes, maybe they could suggest three vintage watches under or around $5000 that I might check out before I make a decision. I also like Explorers. Maybe there's another model I don't know about at all? Thanks for the help!

I'd go for the best 1675 or 16750 available for $5k.
I'd expect it to be a real nice example. |

$5,000 will get you a very fine Rolex. I would buy the newest, best condition GMT or Sub in stainless that the money will afford. Can't go wrong with a Datejust, either. I wouldn't go vintage, unless you really have your heart set on it. You may also find a tt GMT or Sub for the money.

I'd go with a TT blue faced sub, I saw one at the last coin show i went to for $4800, so I'm sure there's plenty to be had in your price range. If not you can easily get a steel sub for around $3500 and as for specific models your just gonna have to go through and see which one speaks to you. No sense in dropping $5k on a watch that your not going to enjoy. And if you could find a TT GMT for under $5k like the above poster mentioned if buy it cuz that's one of the coolest Rolex combos out i think

I agree with many of the postings here. Take your time, do your research, look at lots of watches, and take note of how you feel. Don't buy one for the money, buy it for the joy or excitement you feel. I wouldn't discount vintage or new; both have their merits and their drawbacks. A new DJ or DD may be just the piece for you, or a 5512 or 5513 Sub may become that grail that you search for. Lots of information on TRF and excellent resources to help you with the quest. Researching is indeed the most fun!!

I personally love the sports models and second the suggestions of 5513, 1675, 16800.

1680 or 16800 would be great choices if you want vintage. If I went 16800, I would try to get a matte dial.

Thanks for all the recommendations! I've already started plunging into the research. I thought I was set on a Datejust, but now I'm getting more and more interested in a Sub with a tropical dial. Hoping I can see a few examples in person to get a better feel for things. I'll let you guys know what I end up with. In the meantime, any more words of advice or encouragement are welcome!
