DD40 Which one would you chose?
The DD40 is on the One day/Some day list...
Realistically, unless some long lost Aunt or similar leaves me a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow, its probably never going to happen - but one can dream! Anyway, just in case, the pot ever appears, I narrowed my preferences to the following 4. Both the 60th Anniversary models, rose gold with olive dial & white gold with olive dial. The other 2 are classic yellow gold with champagne dial & the yellow gold with black dial (batten markers not baguette diamonds) So on paper at least my first choice would be the 60th RG. It just looks amazing in pictures, but the reality is I'm thinking the RG may be a bit limiting in terms of where/when it can be worn. Too bling for every day? advise please from RG owners on their experiences wearing this watch in every day situations. So then I thought maybe the 60th WG? But WG has the perennial problem of looking too much like SS to the untrained eye, and realistically, spending that amount of $$$ on a watch it needs to look $$$ if that makes sense. So then I'm thinking - go classic. Pretty much in the same vein as if you ask a small child to draw a house and they draw a square with 4 windows, one in each corner, a door in the middle and a chimney with smoke coming out, to me the DD YG Champagne dial is the stereotypical 'Gold Watch' - not necessarily a bad thing, but just saying! So then, the YG black dial. Wow - in some pictures it 'looks ok' and some its just 'meh!' But, and this is a big but (no, not that sort of 'Big Butt') lol, it looks absolutely phenomenal. Only thing is the 'chequer board' pattern - does it come with the plain black dial without diamond markers? I have yet to see one in the flesh, but the YG black face is currently top of the fantasy watch wish list. Just curious what other forum members thought and if any owners of any DD40 could post 'real world pics' rather than false studio pics it would be really appreciated. Regards |

If you want a watch to last a lifetime you cant go wrong with the YG with Champagne dial. That is the ultimate classic DD setup and will last you your entire life.
I personally have a RG DD40 with chocolate dial but TBH I'm going to add a YG DD40 as well because RG may be the "in" thing right now - not sure about 20 years down the track. |

Having seen them all at Fourtane in Carmel, the WGDD wins me over.

Agree with others, the classic choice is "DD40 Yellow Gold Champagne Dial". Personally, went a completely different way... Everose with chocolate and ice dial.

Both of the green dials are my favorite from any generation of the DD.

I had the YG Black dial DD-40 along with this one. I sold the DD-40 and am very happy with this one and wear it anywhere and any day. One of my favorites. There are still some around in great condition.

It's a shame that only the 36 has the option of yellow gold and olive dial on the Rolex configurator, stunning. Unless it's the same situation as the Datejust 41 where the configurator doesn't show all permutations?

I voted with my wallet for this one.
But, in all seriousness, I would go romans with whatever you choose. They way they play and sparkle against the fluted bezel is pure magic. |

However, with the olive dial being specific to the 60th anniversary, I'm guessing if the YG/olive combo was an option on the DD40, Rolex would have shown it on the website. Although, interestingly, there is no reference to either the WG or YG versions being anniversary models on the website although everyone knows they are. |
