what do you guys think about the value of the 5740 after 1-2 years, after the initial supply "shortage" and newness factor are gone? It will sell at a slight premium initially over MSRP, but I am concerned that its price may behave like that of 5370 (hyped a lot in the beginning, but very easy to get at discount now).

or could it behave like rolex 116500, going up and up despite not being "new" now. i tend not to believe this scenario since they are at 10X price points.

I can’t imagine a 120k watch will fly off the shelf after a few years. The clientele is limited. This will stay above msrp if patek really control the supply but why would they? They want to make money and distribute 2 per AD.

Then any new watch gets everyone in a frenzy and this passes as those waiting get excited on the next fad....at the end of the day watches are collectibles but not necessarily investments.....that's also good....the moment a watch goes above a certain value it becomes a safe queen and the enjoyment of wearing it is gone
Probably doesn’t need to be said but the past dictates that solid appreciation is more often expected in the rarer stainless models. I think this also has to do with it keeping a price range where there is a larger customer base even with a large secondary premium. When you are starting at $120k retail, it is much more difficult to get appreciation as the market exponentially decreases at these price points. A 5740 in stainless would probably be the best investment of this model and in RG probably second runner up. I have found WG in general not to do well appreciation wise, same with Platinum. Hence, I buy watches I truly love and if they happen to appreciate, great, but I don’t count on it. If one is looking for an “investment “ and it has to be one to wear on your wrist, then it’s best to do your homework and buy vintage.

You’re talking about the most popular Patek model and a 10-year bull market, so the 5740 will command a large premium. A large dip in the market will bring the price closer to sticker, but Patek will discontinue it at some point and the price will go right back up. Ad infinitum, this ain’t their first rodeo.

I wonder if anyone here faces the following "dilemma": sport watches with metal bracelets are easier to wear on a daily basis. Complicated pieces with leather scrap could not be worn casually in some circumstances. Value retention also higher for sports watches.

The natural outcome of these considerations is that one only collects sports watches..... I normally wear my 5712 and 116500 in 95% of the time.... my complicated ones on strap mostly in the safe. I don't buy watches as pure investments since there are lots of better alternatives. If I add more metal sports watches like 5740, then one day the majority of the collection will be sports watches, which I think it quite strange..... anyone has thoughts on this?

Funky stitching color can make a strap sporty. I have a 5396 with sporty straps and it works for me with shorts and flip flops.

Yes... this is the state of affairs in the market today. Sports watches dominate in vintage and modern and the rest is not doing well. Lack of compelling designs also makes it worse as people return to classics. Most of my collection is sport watches but there are a couple of patek grails I will add nonetheless in the no sports watch category

I am old school and not a one watch collector. As i wear suits i prefer a traditional dress watch during the week and a sports watch with casual attire. I am sure some find a RMille with a suit appealling....shudder

Patek has had production issues, so there is no firm date yet regarding first allocation date.

I was fortunate enough to try one on at the Salon, but it obviously wasn't for sale and was for display purposes only. It was part of their moving museum collection in which they have every model available to try on at the store for a limited time before it goes to another store. I was fortunate enough to try it on when checking in on another order.

It was striking to say the least. The hefty weight of the gold and striking dial color can't be appreciated on a picture. And the movement is out of this world. I also enjoyed the new clasp on the bracelet which has two tabs that need to be pushed inwards to open it.

Must be why there is a production delay, they must be attaching a ceramic bezel

I doubt PP has any production issues. They are keeping production down in what is a very difficult watch retailing environment to maintain brand value. Owners when they finally get their watch, whatever reference, should appreciate this as it enhances the after sale value of their watch.

This 5740 is hot, very hot.

Was at my AD to collect my latest Patek, making it my 12th so far.

When I enquired about the delivery of this watch, my AD mentioned that this time round I would need to wait a little longer as priorities would be given to many of those top collectors who have also confirmed their interest.
So I wait......hope not for long.

I am also a cynic and couldn't believe that a Swiss company, specialising in precision wouldn't know years in advance what model is being manufactured on what day and for how long. However the 5740 was delayed from July to October and I was advised that my 5131P has been delayed from 4Q18 to 1Q19. So gotta believe something gone pear shaped

Not sure I understand the comment. It's a metal watch with a metal bezel. How is metal being scratched a harbinger of things to come?

So...these super fine finishes on the nautilus and the royal oak are scratch magnets. In my opinion, having owned a couple of royal oaks, the scratches are much more visible and obvious than on a Rolex, for instance. These watches are difficult to resurface easily. It might disturb some, me for instance, to have such an expensive piece in my collection that is scratched up. This one hasn’t even been sold and is already possessing a bezel scratch. It is a harbinger of things to come when you purchase such a beautiful expensive complicated piece.

I hope this helps understanding my comment.

Yes, they all scratch.

I was commenting more about PP/AP finishing vs rolex, which i assumed was more expandive a comment than just PM models.
