The sooner you buy it, the longer you can enjoy it

I was talking with a friend the other day who is about twice my age, close to retirement. He also has an interest in watches and we talk about them from time to time. He has a small collection, but has always dabbled around the edges, for decades - Breitlings, Tags, etc. He turns to me and says, you know what I've always really wanted a Rolex. This is a man who could buy any watch he darn well pleased, but has always been shall we say very conservative, fiscally and with everything else.

This is just a PSA to say that life is short and meant to be enjoyed. The sooner you buy the things you want, or do the things you want, the longer you'll have to cherish those collectibles and memories. Someone on this forum has the signature "enjoy your time". I couldn't agree more.

Sadly, a lesson we sometimes don’t learn until it’s too late.

That resonates with me to a certain degree

I also suspect your friend is also in the position he’s in, to enjoy any watch he could ever want, because he made some smart and perhaps frugal decisions along the way.

I have always used: "You can never buy back Time, So spend it wisely! " as my signature, it was something my dad use to say to me ,in order to remind me to enjoy the journey of life while I was busy building my life and business.

Definitely agree. People take time for granted - but you never know when the train is coming to a stop. Doesn’t mean we should live recklessly, but we should damn well spend some $ and make some meaningful (as well as meaningless, but fun) relationships.

Yeap. The only commodity that is more precious than money is time. We can always make more money if given the time.

In the past year, I've loss 4 co-workers ( 2 x heart attack, 1 x cancer, 1 x suicide). My last blood test came back high for blood sugar & cholesterol. I stopped drinking soda and stayed away from rice, pasta & bread. I lost 35 lbs and blood sugar / cholesterol are somewhat under control, but still a bit high.

I used to be super cheap, but now realized life is too short. I buy and enjoy what I like. Hope to find my watch soon so I can enjoy.

I'm in the camp that says, "if you are not buying it on credit AND you have your savings / retirement program going AND the purchase does not pinch your financial well being in any way, THEN BUY IT. Otherwise do not. I am also one to only finance a house, nothing else.

Absoutely agree! There is no tomorrow. I have the pieces I want and still enjoy trading around. Also like restoring rare finds to be correct and getting them a new home.

One other thing I noticed lately is that once you hit age 80+, you may find yourself in a facility where you live with others and it’s not possible to keep and enjoy expensive jewelry. Some of the grandparents have had to surrender high end items to avoid them being lost or stolen. Sometimes memory fails and it’s not possible to continue to enjoy things like our watches. So, I am a firm believer in enjoying what we can, now (doing so in a responsible fashion for all our life commitments). There is no guarantee of tomorrow. “Enjoy your time” is right!🤙. Great reminder.

So what'd you say to him when he said that he has always wanted a Rolex?

That's why they are always newbies...learning the hard way how to live their life. In the end, they choose to live their life.

Great thread. We all take for granted the time we have. I got into an car accident with no injuries and it was not my fault. Wrong place wrong time. It really changed my perspective on life. You could be doing nothing wrong or dangerous and bam it's over. Since then I have lived by a motto "If you want something or want to do something and have the financial means do it!" You can't take anything with you and you never know when your time is up.
