5164A or rolex platona

here is a question: both watches, the PP 5164A and the rolex daytona platinum blue dial (no diamonds), have about the same grey market price (within 10K difference)- although retail for the 5164A is significantly lower. independently of your watch collection, which of the two watches would you rather own? 5164A or platona?

truthfully probably the platona, as im not a fan of the 5164 as the bezel looks weird with the ears etc, hence why its never been in my collection

just my 2c ents, but good luck with your choice

but quick ? to you OP after seeing some previous posts of yours, what would go better with beads?

Absolutely 5164A. Not a big fan of the Platona blue dial/brown bezel combo

I'm also not a fan of 5164 case and never bothered to get one. I prefer the Platona.

I'm not a huge fan of the Platona...so 5164

but wouldn't a better comparison be the platona against the 5990?

Not a fan of Daytona’s but I’d never pay above MSRP for a watch either.

At MSRP: 5164A hands down... it's lightweight, versatile, and the complication is very useful if you travel a lot

Secondary market, I feel the Platona feels more like its price tag. Although I can't see myself wearing a half a pound of platinum on my wrist every day. It's a heavy watch!

I had this choice a couple of years ago, and I went for the 64. No regrets.

Pre-owned pricing for both seems to have increased quite a bit lately. Not sure why platona prices are going up unless it is just following the SS Daytona trend as platonas are not that hard to get.

If you are Rolex fan, get the platona as it is considered by many to be their flagship watch.. If you feel there is more room for SS Patek prices to head north, then get the 5164A. These two watches attract quite a different group of collectors IMO.

At retail...or at grey (you mentioned grey prices)?

at retail, two totally different price points.

No f’ing way im paying the equivalent of platona prices for a grey 5164, that much i know! lol

I owned and love the Platona. As I aged I had legibility issues with the Daytona dial so traded it for a Smurf (and money). If you can read the dial of a Daytona, then I recommend the Platona.

I love the aquanaut but as a straight choice I’d have the Platona every single time.

I like 5164a more but Platona is simply on another level. The only reason we are even comparing these two is because of the current bubble inflating 5164's value.

If I still had the 5164, I would trade it for the Platona in a heartbeat.

I much prefer the 5164A but I would not fork over 60k for one.

It’s a tricky one. I prefer Patek to Rolex, but I also prefer chronos to a pure travel time. In this case I’d get the platona as I would use it more. I’d prefer a 5968 to both though.

I've got both, but the 5164 is more wearable and useful. I'd rather have a DaytonaC and the 5164 for what you'd pay for the Platona.

Exactly, I own both and would choose the platona every day of the week. However, if the comparison was against the 5990 then the discussion would be different
