WARNING! Be careful with geotags on your pics!
HI all. After a recent discussion with a friend about geotags on photos... And the fact he had no idea his phone automatically tags where the pics are taken, I thought I'd do a test on some images people post on here.
It turns out a massive percentage seem to have been tagged too. So can I just ask everyone to be very careful to make sure if they are taking and posting photos with their phones that you make sure you switch off geotagging, as right now I can see the exact house that a lot of these photos are taken in right there in the image data. Whilst 99.9% of us on here are above board, there will always be lurkers who are not. So please be careful people and help to keep your beloved wrist candy safe. That's it for you mid week public service announcement ;) To the mods... Might be worth making this a sticky... Or adding a warning about this in the intro discussion board for new members. |

Just an fyi, Imgur strips personal data from any uploads, so use that instead of your usual upload site if you're worried about the metadata.

Yeah it's been explained here several times. Some people still don't know so it's good advice regardless.

Just go to your settings and turn all that off.
It really should be opt in, but I guess it's not. I reset mine when I first got it.

Thanks for the heads up this could be dangerous for some people.
I personally am a strong believer of castle doctrine. So intruders welcome.

Can you please be more specific about the settings to switch off on an Apple device ? I also deactivated a lot of the settings related to tracking and automatically sharing from my device but I'm not sure where the geotagging feature is buried. Thanks in advance for any additional insight.

This is so old hat and common sense that it's unbelievable. However, I for one completely forgot about it and it never entered my head
Great reminder, OP

With the sometimes sneaky tactics apps and device manufacturers utilize to get info, it's a chore to opt out or turn off all that covert tracking and data collection. |

At the most I've noticed it puts my town in the name of the pic. There are several thousand people that live in my town. Are actual gps coordinates also embedded in the file details?
