I will be the first to admit my dads watch is nowhere near as nice as yours, I am trying to do the same thing. Hopefully my journey has the same conclusion as yours.

Fantastic thread that I happened to stumble upon, so glad I did!
I love reading stories where the watch was worn as intended and has the history marks to pass down. I don’t believe in the Rolex bling generation of recent years - wear them, mark them and pass them down. I will definitely be keeping an eye on this thread :) |

Correct GILT era PIP
My thanks to Phillip Ridley for thinking of me when he came across a dark amber PIP with correct tritium lume for Gilt piece. Green lume under blacklight and time for the luminescence to linger matches my dial perfectly.
Really satisfying to take my fathers watch another step closer to fully vintage correct. The dial continues to show more brown in bright light but difficult to capture in pictures. Perhaps it will be fully tropical by the time my daughter inherits it. |

Dial shows some tropical brown tones when the sun hits it just right.

Wow...so cool!
I have '66 gilt gloss 5513 in with Phillip for service/restoration; this thread makes me hope mine comes anywhere close to as nice as this. Phillip, thanks for this! |

I just spent a half hour going through this thread...wonderful story!
Do you think your daughter appreciates the personal significance of the watch? |

Thank you. As far as my daughter I'm not sure. Certainly trying. I wear it for any significant life event and make it a point that she sees me wearing it. Seems to me that significance can't be taught so I'm trying to let it build organically over time. Hopefully one day she wears it and thinks about me as I think about my father. She starts high school tomorrow. Attached are pict of her wearing the watch when she was around 7 and a close up from two years ago at her Bat Mitzvah. |

I just inherited an 1803 YG DD after my grandfather passed a few months ago. He was in the travel industry and the watch was one of his prized possessions. It traveled with him all over the world and experienced a great deal of his life. It was probably with him when he met me for the first time. It was with him when he passed. I see myself not as the owner of the watch but as a steward of it so that I can tell my kids stories about the watch and what it experiences with me. Eventually, I hope one of them becomes its steward. My other Rolex is a DJ41 that I’ve had for a couple of years. It was with me when I proposed to my wife, when we got married, and when we found out we’re expecting. It will be on my wrist when the child is born. The watches are not mere timepieces but are storybooks as well. Given how much you cherish your dad’s watch, I’m sure your daughter will come to cherish it as well as she grows older. |

Father to son 1966, 5513
Amazing story, I love all of the pictures! Wear and enjoy that beauty in good health! Your dad is probably beaming with joy!
Also, Dolores is the unsung hero here. Do you still keep in touch? What a sweet woman to hold on to something of your fathers for you. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
