SD116600 Armed Robbery
What are the chances one day to recover a Rolex whose Serial Number is listed as stolen with Rolex ?
Usually i never travel with my Rolex .. my mistake... this time I took it with me on a trip to Medellin (Colombia)... 2 pm, in FRONT of the hotel, 2 guys on a motorbike ... 1 GUN on my head ... and there is my SD going for good !! It's a waiter in the restaurant who noticed the watch and called up his friends (according to the hotel, I was the second guest that week to be robbed after eating there ...) |

SD116600 Armed Robbery
So sorry to hear that. Im glad u are ok. We had an exchange student from Colombia in the late 90's whose aunt and uncle were kidnapped for ransom while he was in the states. Was the watch insured? Unless the crooks sell to someone who will send in for service not knowing its stolen I doubt you will ever see it again. Sorry to be negative.

Happy that you're ok, report it to Rolex, chances of it being recovered are slim to none but you never know.
So the restaurant employee was in on this? I assume the police are involved and investigating?

Not insured.... of course I filed a report with the police ... but more chance to see the watch serviced at Rolex than to have the police recover it !!
I obtained the "live" video footage from the hotel camera's, if permitted by the forum I can post the video here or a link ? And yes, i did file it as stolen with Rolex, along with a police report. |

Not for nothing, but we all should be aware of the shady corners of the world. I don't aim to be politically correct or even care. I use my two eyes and reports from certain areas of the world to see what I am in for. My brother in law is Colombian. I have been back to Medellin with him a number of times. I don't wear any jewelry. No rings, no watch, no nothing. Why? Because Mexico is going thru it's Wild West period. Once the drug problem and corruption are thwarted the area can thrive again. You cant expect to were an expensive watch as an outsider. You are an immediate target. I am a little shocked how easy this was done in broad daylight. You can't find the robbers, but you can find the waiter that sold you out. I would want to speak with him even if it cost a round trip ticket to do it. It's the principle.
However....I am glad you are ok and I am sure that was a traumatic experience none of us want to go thru. |

In this instance your life was more valuable than the SD, sorry to hear this happened but at least you weren't hurt or worse. Those scum bags will eventually pay!

Sorry you had to experience such a horrible incident. I was the victim of an attempted robbery right here in the States with my 9 year old daughter. She slept in our bedroom for nearly six months afterward. It's an awful thing to have to go through.

I'm glad you're OK.
Stuff like this makes me want to give up collecting. I plan on leaving my watches behind for my two daughters, but incidents such as these make me wonder if it is wise. |
