The New Proposed 24 hour UK Drinking Law.

I heard the most naive quote ever on this topic from a publican yesterday. He was on a TV phone in defending the new 24 hour drinking laws. He came out with this little gem:

"It won't make any difference to people getting any more drunk or drinking more, because it has always been illegal for a publican to serve a person who is drunk" What a load of boswelox.

I nearly fell off my chair. Most town centre pubs make their living by serving people who are blind drunk before they even enter their premises.

And this whole bunch of crap about 'Police already have the power to shut down nuisance pubs'.... when, ever, has anybody heard of them doing that?

Our UK society will never adopt the continental café style, so beloved of New Labour because, unlike those other countries. We impose no penalty on those who get blind drunk. Stove in a shop windows, puke over the town clock, sh@g two birds in front of a CCTV camera, and then go and racially abuse the people preparing and serving the Chicken Tikka Phal, they've ordered. And which will end up over the bonnet of the nearest car they find once they've left the restaurant without paying for it.

If they actually imposed the existing laws on licensed premises, drunk and disorderly and anti-social behaviour a tenth, as keenly as they do those for motoring offences, the problem would be cured within months.

Of course, much like the real reasons behind the cost of petrol in this country, the Government want everyone between the age of 16 and 36 to go out and drink 15 pints every Friday and Saturday night as it means they can calculate exactly how much additional tax revenue it will haul them in. If you were making tens of thousands of pounds per week from one pub, would you shut it down?.Until people in the UK see drunkenness itself as anti-social we will never be ready for "continental" licencing laws. But looking at the other side,24 drinking would a great benefit to this country. Just think of all the service industries that would benefit - Glaziers, street-cleaners, makers of little polystyrene boxes. And I can see the taxi-drivers rubbing their hands together in glee since public transport effectively shuts down just after moon-rise.The main argument seems to be: People will pace themselves, knowing they have more drinking time.
No they won't. They'll get blasted asap, as they do now, then either get more blasted, or fall sleep in a pool of vomit then awake and start again.Or is this just another nail in the coffin. is this just the last spasmodic twitch of the British Empire, as it slowly drowns in a puddle of its 24 hour drink laws. Our town centres today are very scary places to walk at night now,but IMO the 24 hour drinking, will make them deadly.

Rant Over.

You'd be ashamed with the ones I've seen in the Caribbean and in the Algarve. Yoikes! Almost as bad as the "ugly American" tourist.
