Sea Dweller 16600 Service Question

My dad gave me his 2000 Sea Dweller 16600 and I'm 99% certain he never had it serviced. He claims the "Rolex" guy he got it from told him that you should never service a Sea Dweller because it's so tricky with that escape valve, whatever that means.

I'm planning to wear this watch for a long a time as possible. Should I pay the $750 to have it sent away for service? My thought was a 20 year old mechanical watch probably needs it. I don't mind if they replace parts or whatever, I'm never going to sell it.

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

The “Rolex Guy” you speak of knows very little it appears, and probably should be called the “Bad Advice Guy”!
These are seviced without issue, and the gas escape valve (small round device on the watch case, opposite side of the crown), does not make it overly complex at all. A Rolex trained watchmaker will have no issues at all..
Given its age, it maybe prudent to have a service done, that’s up to you.
Enjoy you watch and cherish it, being passed down by your father and all..

Congrats on the 16600! Great reference. As to the service I would just echo what the others above me have said

I just got my SeaDweller back from RSC Dallas, it looks brand new. I think it totaled out at about $800

Sometimes RSC replace the valve as they did in my case.

Get it serviced. Not an issue at all.

Afraid your Rolex guy was talking through where the sun dont shine, below a picture of my own personal working tool watch 16600 SD,it was used and many times abused for many years underwater as a real working tool with well over 600 hours underwater. And has been serviced and polished by 3 different RSC world wide, picture taken in Singapore after last service. This working tool has seen more use that todays mainly pampered watches will see in ten lifetimes.

After 20 years, a servicing probably would be a good idea, IMHO. Some would say to wait until you have issues with it, however.

The movement in your watch is like the engine in a Toyota Landcruiser. It operates very well in harsh conditions, it's not finicky in the least, and it yields incredible longevity.

However, as you are presumably two decades out from the last service, a full overhaul in the near future seems justifiable IMHO to replace/upgrade any worn/updated parts, clean and add fresh lubricants, and to also replace any gaskets to ensure the watch maintains good water resistance.
