Rolex Oysterdate Precision

Morning all,

Found a lovely Oysterdate Precision, around £1,500. I'm not too sure on Oysterdates personally though and know a little less.

What're your thoughts on the originality of this watch?

The watch pictured looks like a mid-sized (32mm ?) reference 6466. The watch looks to be correct, from one low grade picture. If you're able take the bracelet off the reference number is located between the lugs at 12 o'clock and serial number at 6 o'clock. Google "Rolex 6466" and you'll get more information.

Thank you, vintagewatch. It's a 6494. and the bracelet codes are K6-7835 & 357. From my own research, this dates the bracelet to 1967 and the watch c. 1959. Does that feel right or am I way off?

Apologies to be so uneducated on these models. I've previously been an IWC collector, and with Rolex I'm personally more interested in Sport and Chronometer models but there's something about this model I just love, I think it's the Patina on the dial...

I don't like the manual wind movements. I do like the red DW.

Have you considered a 1500, 1501 or 6605?

I have a 6494 which has a replacement dial handset, and date wheel. This is pretty common as the original radium dials often deteriorate. I can’t tell from the quality of the picture if the dial on this example has been refinished, but the hands and the red date wheel look period correct to me (but I am not an expert). I would certainly check the case to make sure it is a 6494 and I would also try to get some feedback on the seller. If this is all original then IMO it is in the region of £1000 - £1500 below the current “dealer price”.....but they do vary quite a lot......as most have many replacement parts. Personally I would likely make my decision based on an assessment of the seller.

I think that is a later bracelet. I have my father's old Rolex which is a 6494 like that but second is a steel blue. I am sure it is original because I remember it like that from when I was a child in the early 60s, it is unchanged. The original folded link type bracelets are really light and comfortable but they do wear and I think Rolex might have replaced at service with a later one in the image you posted. I tend to wear the old watch on Sundays but I usually wear it on a leather strap to preserve the original. I use the original bracelet very occasionally. A nice watch that is a joy to wear.

They look a lot nicer, your picture does not do them justice. What other watch can look good and be accurate and wearable after more tha 60 years.

Check the marking at six o clock and should have the Swiss only.

Dial seems refinished. No SWISS

That looks a LOT smaller than a 6494...your wrist must be large. Defintely a later band.
