Rolex sapphire crystal damage?

I have an imperfection on the date magnifier that looks like a smudge that is going vertically. (See photos)

Rolex store is telling me that it’s a scratch on the anti reflective coating; however, all my research here tells me the coating is on the bottom of the magnifier.

The “scratch” is not noticeable by touch. It’s as smooth as new. The dealer tried rubbing it off with alcohol and a microfiber to no avail.

Anyone know what may have caused this?

Turns out it was a scratch on the anti reflective coating. I took some metal polish, buffed it for about 20 seconds and it is now gone.

The AR coating is underneath the crystal cyclops area and not on the cyclops thats just stuck on top of crystal.

Sometimes you will get things in top of the crystal that don’t come off by normal methods. I had one customer, a photographer bring in a sub that looked very much like it had a coating on the underside of the crystal. I agreed but in the end, a quick run underneath a polishing wheel removed whatever it was that had gotten on the crystal.

I wish I knew what he had gotten on the crystal.

I wish I took some before and afters, but there is definitely some glare on the cyclops now after polishing it. This leads me to believe there was some coating on the top side as well. I did some more searching, and some are saying the newer Rolex’s had dual ar coatings.

Perhaps it was transference of another material onto your crystal giving the appearance of a scratch.

Possibly. Whatever it was, it didn’t come off with alcohol and a microfiber. But it did get removed after using metal polish.

That does indeed seem most logical.

One thing about hard saphire surfaces: harder to scratch, but can get marked by something that is often really tough to remove. Drywall can be a menace, but always comes off. Glad you got it sorted.

Be careful of diamond engagement rings or diamond bezels - caveat juxoris.

Maybe a little late for answer. Rolex new cyclops have 2 anti reflective coatings, one on top of cyclop, nothing between cyclop and crystal, and another coating below the crystal.

Which year did they start putting two ar’s there?
As to OP, perhaps younhave something to do with welding/metal working? I also have a thing like that on my crystal- once i melted some scrap gold with my watch on my wrist but under a thick sleeve but still a particle managed to slip through so i learned my lesson
